That's actually restored, but it's HUGE. It's 26 GB. I'll use that as the source. That's the LEAST bad version I could find. It's actually in 2K video, which is ridiculous, I'll reduce it to 1080p.

It's an AI upscaled version of the film I believe. There's some errors, but it's the least worst version I can find. I just downgraded the version from https://archive.org/details/Songofthesouth4K which you can still get if you wish, but the 4K version is in .mov format (like anybody uses this anymore). I converted it to 1080p and mp4, which should work on nearly any conventional television. Just copy to a USB drive, and plug it in.

I will leave this online for 2 days - if you don't pick it up by then, you'll have to ping me. I'll remove it by then. You have 48 hours to grab it. I'll delete this post as well in 48 hours.

It's around 1.9 GB, so it may take some time to download for you, but you will not overload my server. Given what is "typical internet" today, you can probably get the full file in about 1/2 hour or less.

I know a few Germans, and they are all actual Germans. I never asked them specifically about the film, but my impression is they would have thought nothing about it. Also, it's an English film, I doubt they are even aware of it. There's plenty of Germans I've talked with that have never heard of Run! Lola Run! - or Lola Rennt.

That's a cult classic. I used to be a film buff, but engh, it was entirely a waste of my youth. Now when I watch a film, I see actors obviously acting, and a story I've seen in some form or another before. I no longer have the capacity for suspension of disbelief. I quit watching movies and television ages ago, and any acting, I can now see right through. I can still enjoy radio plays and books though, to some extent.

Song of the South in the United States is now seen as racist, there's no context in Europe.

The grim reality of the "Civil War" (or the War of Northern Aggression) is that when slaves were "freed", they had nowhere to go, they couldn't get work, and they starved to death. Millions died. The civil war wasn't about ending slavery, it was about taxation and tariffs. Lincoln was a big asshole and we're taught bullshit about the period. I'm not defending slavery, but the abolishment of it caused a humanitarian crisis, for black people. It was a humanitarian crisis on MANY levels. It should never have happened. Slavery would have ended in time and should have been by more gentle means. Every other nation managed it, except the United States, and it was incidental, not the goal.

I guess the reason the restored original is in .mov format is the restoration work was likely done using Apple's Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro defaults to Apples proprietary .mov (quicktime) video protocol, although it is easy enough to export to mp4 and others from Final Cut Pro.

Well, I used ffmpeg to convert to mp4, which will be compatible with your television, if it has a USB port. This is the command I used:

nice ffmpeg -i "Song of the South (4K Remaster).mov" -vf scale=1080:-1 -metadata title="Song of the South" -crf 26 -acodec copy -movflags faststart "Song of the South (1946).mp4"

You might want to play with the hue a bit, it's kind of pinkish. FFMPEG is a wonderful tool but it's not really meant to be used on the command line so much, but it's extremely powerful, and everybody uses it.

Just last night I was poking around the old movie’s on Disney+ (I know, it’s canceled now, but I got a year subscription for cheap).

Almost all of the old movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s had a content warning about how culturally insensitive they are, even though they are G rated.

Any movie pre 2010 that has non-white people in it gets this warning. It’s the most racist thing I’ve ever seen.

And then they put trans kids in hocus pocus 2. When are they going to start putting in warnings for that?
