If everyone had to pay one penny to send an email, there would be no more spam

It would also be super-useful to be able to tip anyone on the internet when you like something he or she wrote or posted.

But how can you send a penny or a nickel across the internet easily?

It cannot require installing new software. Most people won't install it, and they're right to be suspicious of software installs. Phones are a flaming disaster for privacy because of apps.

Really, you just need to send a credible promise of the penny or nickel. The promise can then circulate - but only as long as the promise is certain to be paid. How would you even pay it without losing money on the stamp?

One way to pay is in human attention, which is really the currency of the internet. But that sounds like ads, ugh. Ads suck.

Bitcoin and the other crypto systems don't work well with tiny payments like a penny or a nickel. Maybe one could let someone else use your computer power in the browser for a little while. People try to do this anyway, mining crypto with javascript on web pages you might visit.

One could in theory do a little work to pay the cent, but at the current minimum wage in CA, one cent is only half of a second of work. How do you even do half a second of work?

Maybe you could fill out a ReCaptcha as a way to pay someone. It will take more than half a second, but it's something useful people need when they want to get into an annoying website and are blocked by Google.

I know that the problem of reliable easy micropayments is hard, but maybe the answer will appear.

How about an email client that you have to register any inbound email addresses so they will be rejected?

But you have to pay to send unsolicited email to get it through. The penny fee collects in a digital wallet, and once a month the fees are reconciled then your card is billed.
Not only that, you get a portion of the proceeds of all of the unsolicited email you got. The more spam you get the better you make out. Though we're talking about Youtube views type of payments here, so you would have to get really high volume to make any money worth while.

Sure, there could be a whitelist of people who don't have to pay to email you.

But how would the whole thing work? How do you make it worthwhile for the people who want to pay you the penny or nickel to contact or tip you?

It would be worthwhile for people to sign up to pay if there were a lot of people who required the penny to email them, but not until then. How do you get over the hump of no one using it because no one is using it?

So are you thinking of starting an email service for people who want less/no spam and senders will have to pay a penny to the host per email? I’d figure that would lead to a lot of regular email not going through. Like say your cable provider won’t pay the cent so you won’t get those notices.

I wasn't thinking of starting an email service, just trying to figure out how to send very small amounts of money over the internet so that people could do things like charging to receive an email.

Make an email digital currency, and those that want to email you would pay one token, to get through to you.
"Dear Sir you may not know me..." for business, pleasure or even trying to contact someone. People you are in contact with could just call and tell you to add them to their email client. That perhaps sends them a token for that whitelisting. But spammers and unsolicited email not only would be paying their SEO and Email campaign companies, but would also be paying you a token for sending you penis enlargement adverts. If you get 20 to 50 spam emails a day, at the end of the year your wallet could start to add up. But folks that paid a token to reach out to you for personal connections. You would then add them to your client. Perhaps the email confirmation could send them their token back.

I like the idea of an email-able digital promise of real payment, but how to check its validity, and that it hasn't been spent already?

Never want to shoot down an idea, but I'm not seeing it. 95% at least are fine with the free email services. Niche markets/customers can make you money, but I'd have no interest if I'm being honest if it's a business idea.

I check my email 2-3 times a day. I don't read 99% of it. I have 86,224 unread emails on my phone currently. I don't care. 284 missed texts. 22 voicemails. I get done what I know needs to be done and ignore the spam bull shit. Having a 0 inbox/text is bullshit. You know what needs to be done daily. I'm not going to read all the shit that gets sent to me. I've never missed anything of importance.

It's not a business idea, just looking at micropayments as a way to reduce spam and tip people on the internet.

CBDC will make this possible. But the draconian controls they implement with the digital surveillance and social credit scoring will negate any benefit of reduced spam.

Good point. I definitely do not want the government knowing whom I'm getting emails from or whom I'm tipping, or able to block those things.

It would be like the "Do Not Call" list from way back. There will be an exception made for political spam.
