That bullshit is a common misconception. There is nothing in the NATO charter specifying what an Article 5 response should be. In fact, it is deliberately kept vague and noncommittal.

This language is relatively flexible. It permits each NATO member to decide for itself what action should be taken to address an armed attack on a NATO ally. It does not require any member to respond with military force, although it permits such responses as a matter of international law. A member may decide that instead of responding with force, it will send military equipment to NATO allies or impose sanctions on the aggressor.

This is why the US should leave NATO. Now. Because if the Russians do call Article 5's bluff, the US won't/can't do shit anyway (because it's not the 50s or even the 80s when we had shitloads of troops and materiel stationed in Europe and Germany had one of the best militiaries in the world according to Jane's Defense). The entire world will see what a fucking paper tiger NATO really is in general and the US commitment to allies in particular. This will negatively impact our other defense alliances - especially in Asia.

Not that I mind the ultimate outcome. I just would rather we prevent the destruction of US credibility that way.

Things have changed from the 1970's to early 2000's. He got declined to be the German Ambassador. Clearly no one thought he was a good candidate. He was only on Trump's admin for 3 months. There's no evidence that he's qualified for anything. He's been wrong on everything Ukraine.

There are smarter military minds. He just trying to make money. Until you realize that you won't understand. All the ex military are trying to make money off something they did 10-15 years ago. Their skills are useless in the current climate.
