As I recall, he died of salivary gland cancer (paratoid). That's quite an uncommon one, and maybe his immune system was low because of the poofter scene. He was kind of disfigured and had some speech problems for a time due to surgeries (paratoid gland contains tributaries of the facial nerve).

I remember at UC Bezerkeley my girl friend at the time lived around the corner of my frat house.
