As I recall, he died of salivary gland cancer (paratoid). That's quite an uncommon one, and maybe his immune system was low because of the poofter scene. He was kind of disfigured and had some speech problems for a time due to surgeries (paratoid gland contains tributaries of the facial nerve).

I remember at UC Bezerkeley my girl friend at the time lived around the corner of my frat house. During summer session, her next door neighbor was a girl (pretty) from one of the Seven Sisters (Wellesley I think) there for the summer. This girl picked up a real dirtball black guy from Telegraph Avenue and screwed loudly in her room once.

It was obviously a combined act of rebellion and conformity (to wear the badge of black fucking courage). Of course, any Prince Charming she met at her debutante ball would never find out, unless she had the venereal warts to show for it.
