At least eight people were killed and more than 2,700 injured, many of them Lebanon-based Hezbollah fighters, when the handheld pagers they use to communicate exploded, Lebanon's health minister said Tuesday.

Firass Abiad said the blasts took place in several suburbs of Beirut, according to Lebanon's National News Agency. Abiad said in a news conference that many of the victims had injuries to their faces, hands and stomachs.

He said one of those killed was an 8-year-old girl.

The direct cause of the explosions was not immediately clear, though Hezbollah quickly blamed Israel for what it called its "sinful aggression." It said it Israel would get "its fair punishment."

A Hezbollah official told the Reuters news agency that the detonation of the pagers was the "biggest security breach" the group had been subjected to in nearly a year of war with Israel.

Mojtaba Amani, Iran's ambassador in Lebanon, was also injured in the incident, though not seriously, according to Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency. Hezbollah is materially and financially backed by Iran.

There was no immediate comment from Israel's Defense Forces.

The incident comes just hours after Israel's security cabinet released a statement vowing to return residents of Israel's northern areas to their homes. Hezbollah, long Israel's enemy, has repeatedly fired missiles at Israeli territory since Hamas' Oct. 7 attacks, causing many residents to flee south.

A pager is a small electronic device that can be worn or fit in a pocket that beeps or vibrates when someone is trying to contact you. It displays the phone number or sometimes a short message. Pagers can usually only receive information, not transmit it, making their location hard to track.

Israel has for months warned that it could launch a military operation to drive Hezbollah away from its border.

OK, seems like Israel did this, but how?

I remember several cases where Israelis inserted explosives into cellphones and even payphones so they could be blown up on demand remotely, and killed Palestinian terrorists that way.

Hezbollah made a big deal that they were getting rid of smartphones fearing they would be hacked by the IDF.

Sweet jayzus. Not even the most dumbfuck of dumbfuck Ukeys are this stupid, I believe. Or at least, dumbfuck Ukeys were killed off for the most part already (every population has its subsets of Forrest Gumps). War Darwinism and all that.

How did they infiltrate 'explosive pagers' into the groups? How were the 'explosives' detonated, and how is that different from detonating a battery? Nobody ever opened these up to look at the insides?

Analog pagers, because the old becomes the new again to avoid digital surveillance.

Phones and electronic devices and electronic communication devises are remote control bullets and obviously have been designed that way.

So this one 'clever strike' has shown the world what they are holding in their hands and pockets.

"Oh, no, it's only these held by TERRORISTS." Well, anybody is a terrorist who opposes their paradigm, including citizens of the Republic. The only thing that keeps you from being declared an enemy of the State is their unilateral declaration of such.

smart phones as smart munitions?

war just got a bit more personal

today perhaps we saw an new evolution in warfare as chilling as it is unsurprising.

hezbollah and a variety of other groups have long used old school pagers as a communications modality because, unlike a cell or smart phone, they cannot be tracked. the system just broadcasts, it does not know where you are. it’s like having an FM radio.

this prevented network analysis and prevented them from being tracked and targeted. until now. (at least on the “targeted” piece.)

someone seems to have found the network and managed to cause all the pagers in it to overheat and explode at once to grim effect for those who had them in pockets. ...

some are arguing that israel somehow managed to get a hold of and compromise these pagers, perhaps at a distributor, perhaps by tradecraft of some sort. it’s possible, but i don’t believe it. i just do not believe the pagers turn over that fast or that it could be so easy or effective or accurately targeted without piles of collateral damage.

my wager (and obviously, i’m guessing here and have no special knowledge just a nasty mind and some technical savvy) is that this was more like stuxnet. it’s a software hack that used the code of the pagers to remotely compromise them, take over control at a basic level, and mismanage the battery/thermo processes to make it overheat and explode.

and this means that anything with a Li-ion battery and a network connection just became a highly targeted (and targetable) weapon. a laptop is a claymore. it makes most EV’s into WMD’s. a whole new arms race just started and such weapons tech never stays in the hands of governments for long.

it’s long been a fact of life that computers, cell phones, appliances, and vehicles are laughably insecure from the standpoint of a large nation state’s intelligence communities. if the NSA wants to root your cell phone, you’re getting rooted. ...

but now it has. and genies like this do not go back in the bottle. such ideas, once seen spread and metastasize. gloves come off and things explode. even if this was somehow a case of “we snuck a little semtex into the pagers” this vulnerability vector remains.

did we literally just see half our electronic world become a weapon? are we all carrying grenades with remote pins triggerable by who knows whom? because it sure looks like we are.

and that’s not good.

for a very long time, security around computers, systems, phones, appliances, cars, and 400 other electronic items has lagged hideously, much of it at government behest (and by “behest” i mean “demand” along the lines of “nice company you got there. make your phone OS secure or all your emails auto-encrypted by default and we’ll burn you to the waterline then sink what’s left.)

Really doubt it was the batteries. Here is a video of all types of lithium ion battery fires from phones, tablets, computers, e-cigarettes etc.. Even after the initial (much smaller) explosion, they continue to spark and spit fire.

None of the video we have seen in Lebanon is like this. They are all explosions with no fires.

Many of the victims have lost parts of their limbs which would not be the result of a battery catching fire and exploding.

Smart phones as smart munitions. Thanks, Israel, we were trying to save that one for a broader mass kill, not just a few wounded Hez.

"for the purpose of the discussion today, let’s put aside the specific tactical geopolitics here (and if folks want to argue about that, i’m sure there are 100 online venues that would be happy to engage.) instead, i’d like to speak more generally about what this means from a tactical standpoint for pretty much every denizen of the developed world:
you all just got tagged onto the battlefield.
and you should know about it.

presumably, that could have meant “BOOM” for a decade now. they could take down a plane with a laptop thermal excursion or quite literally blow your nuts off with an iphone in a front pocket.
the fact that this has not happened is not technical.
either:
1 it has happened and is just not recognized because there has been no pattern and all the evidence burned
2 or restraint has been applied because the information from such ecosystems far outweighs and role as a weapon and “don’t spook the prey.”
3 or, of course, some mix of the two
but now it has. and genies like this do not go back in the bottle. such ideas, once seen spread and metastasize. gloves come off and things explode. even if this was somehow a case of “we snuck a little semtex into the pagers” this vulnerability vector remains.

Well, it's also reckless to fire unguided rockets.

Hezbollah is an elected political party in Lebanon.

When they bomb Warsaw in 39, and Rotterdam in 40, etc. they can't crocodile tears about Dresden in 45.

Turnabout is fair play.

Did the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon have a Hezbollah provided Pager?

26   AmericanKulak   2024 Sep 17, 4:03pm

I guarantee you those pagers with their little batteries didn't go off like that. They'd keep cooking off or burning.

Pretty sure this was a tampered with shipment with a little extra placed inside.

Nobody could assure that these devices were being detonated exclusively in the proximity of combatants. The superficial schadenfreude creates justification for more Hatfield and McCoy exchanges of atrocities, ultimately zero sum. Of course, maybe that's the purpose.

They all went off a few seconds after receiving a text; and they blew up, they didn't just heat up. Like I said, a litle beeper couldn't blow in seconds like what happened in the videos just by overriding the battery controls or something. At worst, they would have heated up and people would have thrown them out of their pockets; not have them completely blow up seconds after a notification. There was something extra special in those beepers.

I suspect Hezbollah ordered a bunch from China that were transhipped or resold from Dubai, and the Mossad got the shipment and had them packed with a little special unadvertised feature of plastic explosive.

The Gulf Arabs hate Hezbollah and Iran more than the Israelis do, something that Syrian Girl and Dawson don't like to mention.

You literally can't get more precise than this type of attack.

Fuckin world record level of precision.

But people still find ways to complain......
32   clambo   2024 Sep 17, 6:06pm

.

Yeah Patrick, I heard on news radio that the Hezbollah leader told his soldiers to switch from cell phones to pagers and that explosives were put into the pagers at the manufacturing plant.

Not sure how feasible it is for the Mossad, etc. gaining access to this manufacturing plant in Taiwan and plant those explosives.

Let alone how did they go undetected as far as at least one worker at the manufacturing plant to not inform on this.

Or these pagers were intercepted by the Mossas in the supply chain like at the Fed Ex warehouse in Lebanon ?

Android and Chromebook have safety features like thermal throttling to protect from overheating.

.
37   Ceffer   2024 Sep 17, 11:29pm

Well, what seems the most likely speculation to me (which may be no reflection of the reality) is that they had the interceptive tech to explode the batteries.

Intercepting thousands of pagers, disassembling them precisely with a precise amount of explosive in the precise way for all of them sounds unusually labor intensive and lengthy unless it was done de novo right at the factory as part of the original assembly process. It does not seem likely the factory would have been complicit in such a plot. Also, the devices already have the bomb built in, why add another?

It would also leave duds that didn't explode that could be examined after the fact because very low probability every single one would have gone off as intended.

They posit the 'explosive' theory after the fact to disinform or cover up their particular ability to trigger the batteries in the way they did?

They likely pulled a boner in their impulsive glee revealing something that they should not have i.e. that lithium batteries can be exploded remotely like that and used as weapons. Of course, cynicism in this day and age and the multi tasking of the Global syndicates would make such remote detonation an almost a priori logical deduction. LOL! Green assassination and maiming. It would also please the demonic tendencies.

I burned my arm with a Galaxy sports watch that was supposed to be measuring some health variable. I was surprised it got that hot that fast. I turned it off, never repeated the measurement, and it was otherwise fine after that, but am not surprised these items could be triggered as small bombs.
38   Ceffer   2024 Sep 18, 12:04am

I'm still inclined to think that there is a counter-disinfo to exonerate the widely used technologies or that these were 'special' pagers. There would be an immediate denial apparatus to reassure the public they weren't carrying remote triggered bombs.

Even if they could just put in particular batteries that contained explosive, who is to say how many of these bomb batteries are out there, where, and how and when are they intended to be detonated? It almost doesn't matter if regular batteries can or cannot do this. They have demonstrated that they can seed bomb batteries into standard products at will.

How many of these bomb batteries are there, and where are they? How and where were they manufactured and in what numbers? The batteries obviously functioned 'normally' up to the point they exploded. How many of these bomb batteries are going be showing up on the black market? All you have to do is have a remote triggering software and place a bomb battery into the phone of your target(s) when they are unaware? Or sell batches of standard product specially equipped with bomb batteries? It's a terrorist genie that they have let out of the bottle and it is not going to remain exclusively in the hands of Israelis.

The Israelis are badass.

It’s funny, I put up a thread here maybe 8 or so years ago calling the government gangster. The few remaining Democrat supporters on Pat.net at that time incorrectly objected to my description.

And here Israel goes and pulls one of the most gangster moves of all time, on par with Heisenberg coordinating a attack killing 10 men in different prisons simultaneously just so he didn’t have to pay off their families for their continued silence.
