Really doubt it was the batteries. Here is a video of all types of lithium ion battery fires from phones, tablets, computers, e-cigarettes etc.. Even after the initial (much smaller) explosion, they continue to spark and spit fire.

None of the video we have seen in Lebanon is like this. They are all explosions with no fires.

Many of the victims have lost parts of their limbs which would not be the result of a battery catching fire and exploding.

my wager (and obviously, i’m guessing here and have no special knowledge just a nasty mind and some technical savvy) is that this was more like stuxnet. it’s a software hack that used the code of the pagers to remotely compromise them, take over control at a basic level, and mismanage the battery/thermo processes to make it overheat and explode.
and this means that anything with a Li-ion battery and a network connection just became a highly targeted (and targetable) weapon. a laptop is a claymore. it makes most EV’s into WMD’s. a whole new arms race just started and such weapons tech never stays in the hands of governments for long.
it’s long been a fact of life that computers, cell phones, appliances, and vehicles are laughably insecure from the standpoint of a large nation state’s intelligence communities. if the NSA wants to root your cell phone, you’re getting rooted.
presumably, that could have meant “BOOM” for a decade now. they could take down a plane with a laptop thermal excursion or quite literally blow your nuts off with an iphone in a front pocket.
the fact that this has not happened is not technical.
either:
1 it has happened and is just not recognized because there has been no pattern and all the evidence burned
2 or restraint has been applied because the information from such ecosystems far outweighs and role as a weapon and “don’t spook the prey.”
3 or, of course, some mix of the two
but now it has. and genies like this do not go back in the bottle. such ideas, once seen spread and metastasize. gloves come off and things explode. even if this was somehow a case of “we snuck a little semtex into the pagers” this vulnerability vector remains.
did we literally just see half our electronic world become a weapon? are we all carrying grenades with remote pins triggerable by who knows whom? because it sure looks like we are.

They all went off a few seconds after receiving a text; and they blew up, they didn't just heat up. Like I said, a litle beeper couldn't blow in seconds like what happened in the videos just by overriding the battery controls or something. At worst, they would have heated up and people would have thrown them out of their pockets; not have them completely blow up seconds after a notification. There was something extra special in those beepers.

I suspect Hezbollah ordered a bunch from China that were transhipped or resold from Dubai, and the Mossad got the shipment and had them packed with a little special unadvertised feature of plastic explosive.

Yeah Patrick, I heard on news radio that the Hezbollah leader told his soldiers to switch from cell phones to pagers and that explosives were put into the pagers at the manufacturing plant.

Well, what seems the most likely speculation to me (which may be no reflection of the reality) is that they had the interceptive tech to explode the batteries.

Intercepting thousands of pagers, disassembling them precisely with a precise amount of explosive in the precise way for all of them sounds unusually labor intensive and lengthy unless it was done de novo right at the factory as part of the original assembly process. It does not seem likely the factory would have been complicit in such a plot. Also, the devices already have the bomb built in, why add another?

It would also leave duds that didn't explode that could be examined after the fact because very low probability every single one would have gone off as intended.

They likely pulled a boner in their impulsive glee revealing something that they should not have i.e. that lithium batteries can be exploded remotely like that and used as weapons. I burned my arm with a Galaxy sports watch that was supposed to be measuring some health variable. I was surprised it got that hot that fast. I turned it off, never repeated the measurement, and it was otherwise fine after that, but am not surprised these items could be triggered as small bombs.

I'm still inclined to think that there is a counter-disinfo to exonerate the widely used technologies or that these were 'special' pagers. There would be an immediate denial apparatus to reassure the public they weren't carrying remote triggered bombs.

Even if they could just put in particular batteries that contained explosive, who is to say how many of these bomb batteries are out there, where, and how and when are they intended to be detonated? It almost doesn't matter if regular batteries can or cannot do this. They have demonstrated that they can seed bomb batteries into standard products at will.

How many of these bomb batteries are there, and where are they? How and where were they manufactured and in what numbers? The batteries obviously functioned 'normally' up to the point they exploded. How many of these bomb batteries are going be showing up on the black market? All you have to do is have a remote triggering software and place a bomb battery into the phone of your target(s) when they are unaware? Or sell batches of standard product specially equipped with bomb batteries? It's a terrorist genie that they have let out of the bottle and it is not going to remain exclusively in the hands of Israelis.
