The danger of carrying empy is much bigger than the danger of blowing off one's balls (which does not exist if one is not being rapper-stupid) . As for "flashing" empty gun - that's the surest way to get a bullet between one's eyes or be cut to pieces. The situation where it's not the case us another "luxury scenario" where the gun probably wasn't needed at all.

Carry in a good holster (not some floppy shit which creases and gets into the trigger guard), carry in a position where you don't flag your privates or major arteries (meaning no appendix carry) and carry someting with long-ish trigger pull (DA/SA, DAO, etc).
