This is the main thing. If he's the front runner for Dems he's toast. He will lose every single swing state and I don't see any other candidate possibility at this date in time. With a high hispanic population and whites downstate, they're not voting for an Indian guy or two black females. Problem is the IL Republican party is feeble, weak, shitty in IL. The seat is there for the taking though. Durbin last won with 54.9% of the statewide vote. That's not a super high percentage for an incumbent that was in the seat for 3 previous terms in a blue state. Need a talented hispanic Republican to get the Chicago vote. Downstate they will vote for a Hispanic person over black or Indian.
