Do not be fooled. Pharma advertising has nothing to do with selling their prescription drugs. A doctor is not going to care what ad his patient saw on TV when the doctor does a diagnostic and treatment. The whole reason, and I mean the whole reason, that Pharma buys ads is to be such a high revenue source for the broadcast/print industry as to insure favorable press. Same tactic as used by the defense industry. It is not like those Lockheed-Martin ads are going to convince your or me to replace our worn F-15 with a new loaded F-35. It is all about buying the press.

I guess you were fooled. When a network has 1/3 its's ad revenue from Pharma, there is no way the news will be anything but glowing reports on Covid shots and childhood vaccines. Late night TV comedians dare not make fun of pharma but instead denigrate the "anti-vax" crowd. A guy like Colbert may not have even got the shot himself, but I am sure CBS let him know who butters his bread. The fact that the ads may have sold a few fat people some more Ozempic is incidental.

HeadSet is right about this. The drug companies are primarily concerned with controlling the news to suppress the horrible truth about their drugs, and the way they control the news is to threaten to take away their advertising revenue.

Selling whatever drug is not nearly as important to them.

Doctors will comply just to avoid a negative review, online or otherwise.

A shrink once told me that in France, no matter what the patient came in for, if the patient leaves the office without some kind of scrip, the patient walks out angry. So, the French doctors wind up oversubscribing by default. If the pharma ads fill in the blanks and offer profit incentives, so much the better.

Doctors can directly sell cancer chemotherapy drugs to patients with huge markups. So, how much does that increase the 'diagnosis' of cancers when the doctor can make tens of thousands of dollars from a single patient just by writing scrips?
