Senate Democrats on Thursday voted down legislation that would have guaranteed paychecks for U.S. service members and essential federal workers as the government shutdown drags into its fourth week.

At yesterday’s press event, President Trump announced that a “private donor” who wishes to remain nameless donated the money to cover military pay during the Schumer Shutdown. “He called us the other day and said, ‘I’d like to contribute any shortfall you have because of the Democrat shutdown, because I love the military and I love the country,’” Trump explained.

Hopefully, whoever it is will eventually be reimbursed. But the federal government is probably not allowed to formally borrow money during a shutdown. In fact, the legality of using private money to pay military salaries is, shall we say, in a grey area. But it’s welcome, and I doubt anybody will sue over it because of the optics. Think about it.

Yup. Plain and simple a Dem shut down. They can negotiate later on what they want and have an easier time because they only need half then I believe for things like health care. No chance in hell the Republicans with a majority will get something like 6 members to jump ship to get to 60 for the Dems.

These shut downs are always stupid. The average American doesn't notice. There are some hurting without a check for for sure. I can't answer the specific question, but Congress votes on its own rules. As outrageous as this sounds, it's allowed in the Constitution, but I don't think that those who wrote and approved the Constitution ever imagined how the insane levels this leeway would engender could cause such perverse and catastrophic consequences as we see today.

BUT it only takes 51 votes to change Senate rules. Which the GOP has.

So the GOP Senate can end outright or just end filibusters for budget bills.

So, some members of Congress are trying to put together a bipartisan committee to negotiate an end to the Shutdown. The problem is that the Democrats want some sort of an extension to the Obamacare subsidies. Problem is that the Republicans aren't coming out with something they'd like. So, I have thought of one. How about for every billion in healthcare subsidies, we take away one billion in section-8 housing allowances.

Once the Republicans start asking for stuff in return, the Democrats would probably fold.

Strange rumor floating out there that many of the long list of Trump's oligarch billionaire 'supporters' are being held under military house arrest and their assets seized. They are supporting by tribunal or threatened tribunal, not voluntary.

It may be why Trump is receiving 'donations' to support the interim paychecks for the military etc.

Trump is pushing limits to reduce the deficit. And he's seeing how far he can go with reducing the federal bureaucracy.

I consider 2024 as being outside the COVID funding years of 2020-2023, and it looks promising that the 2025 deficit will not be greater than that of 2024. That ultimately may help to keep interest rates down.

The Trump administration will likely state that certain agencies are not essential and that was demonstrated as far as the furloughs having no overall tangible effect on the American public.
