What I miss about California:

1. Surf
2. Hiking

That's pretty much it.

Why I'm glad I left California:

1. My business costs (I run 4 businesses) plummeted and opportunities skyrocketed once leaving. I see more average people in ATL starting successful businesses that I ever did in CA
2. Average people outside of CA can afford a decent quality of life, where as in CA, everyone was scraping by or complaining about housing/cost of living, job hopping
3. Homeless people shitting and shooting up in public.
4. Homeless people building tent cities everywhere
5. Reasonable political conversations can be had in the workplace in other states - whether you are left/right or center. You can usually find something to agree on
6. I can technically and comfortably retire at 36, I'm mortgage/debt free and am about to dabble in flips/rentals with my spare change
7. Lack of common sense gov't - ex: Pelosi is trying to normalize extremists like Ilhan Omar
8. Lack of common sense gun laws.
9. Lack of open minded-ness. Granted, people in CA will tell you there are open minded if you are into their PC bullshit, whatever cause - but the minute you express an alternate view, you're a bigot, racists, xenophobic etc...
10. Gas is a lot cheaper elsewhere
11. In California, my kids weren't allowed to play "tag" in school - they had to play "shadow tag" which they both said was boring
12. Kids sports in California, they award participation trophies for losing teams. Other states, WINNING is encouraged (winning is more fun btw)
13. Due to everyone leaving CA, property values in other metro's like Austin, Atlanta etc are climbing. I'm up almost $80-100k in the last 2-3 years. Pretty sure California has topped out.
14. Where I live, it's ok to call a man a dude, and a woman a dudette. Not by some obscur pronouns that actually misclassify the gender a person WANTS to be.

Not a California hater at all. I miss the natural beauty and state parks. But the political climate it toxic and lack of common sense leaves a lot to be desired.

Are you actually trying to convince me that California is a Christian conservative state? My, aren't you precious!

It is. I had the "privilege" to attend a service at evangelical megachurch in the San Joaquin Valley for my partner's nephew's non-baptism. These folks are fundamentalist enough that they reject infant baptism because Jesus was not an infant at his baptism.

By coincidence it was on the Sunday before the Proposition 8 referendum. Almost everyone in attendance, including my inlaws, was wearing a Yes on 8 button. My partner and I stood out by not wearing those. Folks offered to give us one.

The attendees reflected the diversity of our state (with the obvious exception of tolerance for same sex partnerships): Latino, Asian, black, white in roughly equal proportion to the overall population. Maybe an outsized representation of blacks being has how we were away from the Gentrified Coast. There were two guest speakers at the service that Sunday: the mom and dad Duggar from a reality TV show about their family and huge number of kids.

I had known about this Evangelical Community ever since I became partner with someone who is related to some of them. (You should know, none of these folks are white). Even though I knew about it, was still a culture shock to attend the Mega Church service.

Many large, young families of all colors there, united in their intolerance. Just over the Altamont Pass from Cool and Hip Artsy Fartsy Smug Bay Area, it felt like I was light years away.

California is many things. It is also an Evangelical Conservative State..... outnumbered by a Left Coast Liberal State.

This is why the Left misses sooo badly when they talk about conservatives and Trump supporters being a bunch of racists. We aren’t, in fact we are much more integrated and comfortable with other races than white Leftists will ever be.
Every time a Leftist brays nonsense like this, people laugh and tune them out.

Oh and about the homo thing. Evangelicals in California have evolved a little since 2008. Homosexuals and transgenders are welcome at any of those churches, and nobody will disrespect you, although most still consider the lifestyle a sin, although we are all sinners so what’s the difference? That’s the general feeling nowadays. They still don’t like in-your-face homosexuality preferring that sex of any sort remain something private. And they definitely don’t appreciate attempts to “educate” children about the homosexual lifestyle or glorify it in any way. To us, it’s an unfortunate condition, and not something to wish on our children.

Furthermore, the platform tech is now built on was started under conservatives. I had a lot of family wrapped up in that back in the day in SV before my time. I'm sure there were man bites dog cases but it wasn't the hippies that built that.

For the record they came from Iowa farming and military stock. Large Irish family in Norcal with kids who did the jobs leftists say American's can't or won't do: Picking strawberries, plumbs, peaches and working in the peach cannery near Sacramento in their late teens. Alongside what in the 60s were legal migrant workers. Migrant workers who even then spent most of the year on the state dole because only certain times of the year is harvesting/canning required.

Gave them a good work ethic and thus they excelled in education and tech (life in general) in the 70s-90s.

Sorry, here's the correction.

25% of eligible voters voted for Trump , which means 75% DIDN'T vote for Hillary.

Plus, Trump is around a 50% approval rating, which is DOUBLE the percentage that voted for him, so yeah, I'd say he has the support of everyday Americans. Stop getting your news from Rachel Maddow and Anderson Cooper.

Both buyers and sellers are feeling less optimistic about the housing market than they were a year before, according to Fannie Mae’s national housing survey.

The mortgage finance company, which compiles an index measuring homebuying sentiment, reported that the February index was down 1.5 points from the year earlier.

The index is based on a survey of home buying and selling sentiments and income changes, as well as beliefs about the future for home prices and mortgage rates. It found that the net share of Americans who say it is a good time to buy a home dropped by nearly a third over the past year to 15 percent from 21 percent. The net share who said it is a good time to sell also fell, to 30 percent from 36 percent. Most Americans believe mortgage rates will go up over the next year, while fewer believe that home prices will continue to rise than they did before.

Doug Duncan, Fannie Mae's chief economist, called the drop in home price growth expectations "notable," with the net share of consumers expecting home prices to rise falling 19 points from the survey high hit at the start of 2018.

"While declining home price expectations may point to improving affordability, the share of consumers who think it's a bad time to buy has grown over the last year, and high home prices remain the most frequently cited concern," Duncan said in a press release. "It is plausible that consumers believe that price gains could decelerate further, making it worthwhile to wait rather than act now."

New Houston area home prices edge downward, according to Census data.

The price of a newly constructed home fell in December from the year before, according to preliminary Census data.

The average sales price fell 6 percent, to $377,000 from $402,900.

The downward movement was driven by a shift in the number of units sold for less than $300,000.

That shift was particularly marked in the sub-$150,000 range.

Of new homes sold in December, 6 percent were priced below $150,000, three times the share of the year before.

Can American Consumers Survive Another Economic Downturn? - Customers worry about economy but are saving less in an on-demand world.

PurePoint Financial’s second “State of Savings in America” survey points to financial trends impacting American consumers in 2019. Among key findings, one-fourth of American consumers are choosing convenience over savings with on-demand applications expected to increase this trend.

Freedom from the stress of money is top of mind for American consumers when dreaming about their future (59%), but many don’t have ongoing savings habits that will prepare them for long-term financial success or protect against a potential financial crisis in the future, according to new research from PurePoint Financial, a hybrid digital bank and division of MUFG Union Bank, N.A.

According to the “State of Savings in America” survey, savings balances are down 35% and 88% of Americans are concerned about another economic downturn, and for good reason; 83% of those impacted by the Great Recession are still recovering.

Economists around the world are predicting another market slump, but the research found that 80% of Americans are not very confident they could survive another recession or market downturn in the near future. The reason: six in 10 of those who are not confident are still living paycheck to paycheck.

While nearly half (44%) of respondents impacted by the Great Recession have cited keeping a closer eye on their finances since the recession, one in seven have admitted they haven’t changed their savings behaviors since being impacted.

Confidence Up, Habits Down

Respondents report feeling less anxious about the job market, political environment and other external factors than in 2017. However, consumers are saving less, have worse savings habits and nearly half don’t feel proud of how much they’ve saved. In fact, fewer Americans are disciplined, habitual savers. Forty-one percent of respondents are saving via direct deposit, down 6% points from 2017. Even more so, crash diet saving is a popular tactic, with half of Millennials categorizing themselves as aggressive short-term savers.

Surprisingly, more consumers are taking savings into their own hands, with 16% of respondents reporting hiding cash around their homes, compared to 12% in 2017. Some 73% of respondents are not actively looking for the best rates or places to save the money they are putting aside, possibly leaving money on the table. As a result, respondents reported a decline in median savings balances, down to $1,500 in 2018 compared to $2,300 in 2017.

According to the Federal Reserve, there is more than $9 trillion sitting in accounts earning less than .09 basis points. PurePoint experts recommend saving at least 10% of your annual income in a high-yield savings account with at least 2% interest rate.

“Our survey found that one in three people in the U.S. don’t feel in control of their finances and half are too embarrassed to talk about their savings with their friends,” continued Habis. “We understand how important financial security is to all of us and that saving may seem daunting, but it just takes minor adjustments, such as creating financial goals, setting aside whatever you can manage from each paycheck or searching for a better interest rate for your savings account.”

Creating Habits in Fitness and Finances

When ranking the top three most important factors in their future, respondents reported having good health (76%), financial savings (73%) and a relationship/family (68%) as the top three responses. That said, respondents noted that saving is their most rewarding activity, even more than losing weight (79% vs. 47%). But there’s more work to be done with crash-diet savers; two in five respondents consider themselves as aggressive short-term savers, for things like weddings and trips, but they’re not consistently saving in between.

Consumers Are Living for Today

Despite concern about their future financial health, at least one quarter of consumers admit to prioritizing convenience over saving. The quick rise of on-demand applications indicates this number will quickly increase over time. The research found that two in five respondents would spend four times as much on transportation to save 20 minutes and one in three would choose to take $1,000 now rather than waiting a year for $3,000; this number was significantly higher with Millennials at 43%.

The 2018 PurePoint State of Savings in America survey is an online survey among 6,000 adults in the U.S. (aged 18+), commissioned by PurePoint Financial and conducted by independent research firm Edelman Intelligence. The survey examined current behaviors, drivers, and barriers to saving among adults in the U.S. Data was collected Dec. 15, 2018 – Jan. 2, 2019, with a margin of error of +/- 1.27%. 2018 was the second wave of the survey, building off of the benchmark wave that was conducted in July/August 2017.
