Its populous didn't have the income to become a consumer based economy (the people are quite rich, but not from wages, but from ponzi scheme investments). Anyways, China finds itself in 2021 with about 26% of its economy devoted to construction. This compares to the US @ about 6.5% (it was about 7.3% in 2008 at the height of the housing bubble).

Real estate is generally massively debt financed. Just like what happened here in the States back in 2008, nobody is willing to loan any more money on Chinese construction projects. There are already trillions of $ of bad loans outstanding. China will try to paper over the financial losses, but a couple hundred million freshly unemployed construction workers is going to tear that country a new one unless the rest of society is willing to pay for them to do nothing.

There are no silver bullets to this problem.

Perhaps I was cowardly and was more afraid of my safety, but I did worry for his although I don't know if it was justified.
