In fact you didn't really need great internet if you had cable TV, but if you're going to be streaming a lot of content as an alternative to cable TV, then you must have high speed internet, and cable companies are the major providers of high speed internet.

The problem with using the cable or phone companies as an example is that installation of infrastructure is needed and requires more regulation as to who can use it and for what. So, consolidation of these types of companies can make sense because of the infrastructure complexity issue, but that means we'd have to regulate them more like a utility so that price-gouging doesn't occur. With the advent of satellite TV and cellullar, this is changing because fiber/cable/phone lines to the neighborhood are no longer required, however, satellites and cell towers are now the focus of "who owns what rights to use it".

I think it's hard to apply the same principles from the cable/phone industry, which operates more like a utility, to the healthcare industry. Different animals that require different regulation (or lack thereof).

If you're fine with dvd quality you can stream unlimited without it counting towards your data from many services. For occasional work from home the 6GB or 10GB hotspot in addition to the unlimited streaming should totally suffice. Even when they throttle you after that it is still fast enough for non-video related work. The hotspots are super small compared to bulky boxes or wireless routers and if you want to go completely without hardware you can use your phone to tether and take the internet with you (I prefer having a small hotspot device at home). Def. worth a try if your reception at home is good.
