Trump approval reaches all time new low : 36%.

Hillary has a 98% chance of victory.

If Trump was cutting back oil production in the US or reducing the size of our military, you would at least have some plausible explanations as to why Putin would favor Trump over Hillary.

Trump can't do shit for Vlad now. His hands are pretty much tied by all this shit coming to light. Poor Vlad, no detente/reset for him.

As always, the Democrats are the Russian's best friends.

Funny how throughout the 80s, even Establishment Center-left Rags and Programs ran "Let's get along with the USSR" editorials on a regular basis.

Today, you can't find one that doesn't postulate that Putin is Hitler and never, ever a contrary position.

The same people who rah-rah'd Obama's "Russian Reset" and snickered at Romney in the Debate about the level of threat Russia posed, are now like
"HOLY FUCK!!! RUSSIA!!!! RUSSIA DONE DID THIS AND THAT AND THE OTHER THING!!!!"

Just the 1980's?

The Democrats have been easy on Russia until about 2 minutes ago when they thought they could use it to take down Trump. There is hardly a Russian ally or Marxist government that Democrats didn't support.

And lets not forget Ted Kennedy's actions in 1984.

"Kennedy’s message was simple. He proposed an unabashed quid pro quo. Kennedy would lend Andropov a hand in dealing with President Reagan. In return, the Soviet leader would lend the Democratic Party a hand in challenging Reagan in the 1984 presidential election. “The only real potential threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations,” the memorandum stated. “These issues, according to the senator, will without a doubt become the most important of the election campaign.”"

Once again, Trump is this front man. Bannon is the brains.
Now Trump can appeal to Democrats (which he has) and ask them to fix things. This brings them to the negotiating table, actively participating in the process instead of sitting back and saying "No." Once everyone is talking again, something can be hammered out that will please the majority and Trump will sign it.
This is a marathon, not a sprint you ducking duck!

So, what exactly changed after this debacle that will bring the Dems to the table now as opposed to 2 weeks ago?

Because people are still overwhelmingly displeased with Obamacare, whose costs continue to skyrocket out of the means of even the most ardent supporters. If the Democrats show a resolve to keep it AS IS without any modifications, then they own the slow motion disaster and lose even more bigly next election. As a purely political move, this one is a master stroke.

But my question was what changed in the last 2 weeks. All of those things were true before Trump was humiliated by this bill failing. Why didn't he just work with Dems from the start if that's what he really wanted to do?

For the challenged ducks, let me make this simple. The President can NOT legislate by himself! He needs about 450 congressmen to do that! Balance of powers! Honestly it's like you've never cracked a social studies book.

82019   Shaman   2017 Mar 27, 7:19pm

What's changed is that the GOPe has been shown for the fraud that it is! They had seven years to come up with a better plan and they failed miserably. The other stuff hasn't changed and is most relevant to your original question which is why I gave it. The GOPe thought it was in power but has now learned differently. The factions which remain must come together to produce something that is actually good for America. Trump can NOT legislate! The most he can do is encourage people to legislate and sign off on whatever is produced!
Read your Constitution, people!

He's certainly giving it a good go at implementing much of what he promised asap. Not sure most people really want him to follow through on putting Clinton in jail, but the wall and replacing Obamacare may yet happen.

Why on Earth would the GOPe repeal Heritage Foundation legislation?

The point was they wouldn't, they'd double down on it. Which they did. Which showed the voters that the GOPe was everything they were afraid it was, and sowed the seeds of its decline. Trump is, hopefully, the first in a line of reformers. He's a bully and a swaggering fool at times, but he was what was available for the populist movement that was due. You know that the majority now believes cannibis should be legal? That's populism baby, but the entrenched deep state doesn't want it. You still have the same enemy, it's just going to take time. You gotta hang in there like MLK and his Dream.

Good point.

Why would Ryan, whose wife is a lobbyist for Pharma, BC/BS, and other insurance companies and private hospitals, wanna kill his working wife's cash cow?

Ryan was trying to hide the penalty by shifting the payee from the IRS in your income taxes, to the insurance company when you suck it up and pay the rack rent after avoiding ludicrously overpriced health "insurance". That would help save the Obamney care by redirecting Public Ire and Impetus from Reform away from DC.

They'd call in some Idaho or South Dakota monopoly insurance provides, yell at them a bit in committee, and then go to recess with nothing changed.

The Republicans currently control the Senate, the House, the White House, and the Supreme Court. For the past 7 years when they didn't have this monopoly, they "tried" to repeal Obamacare 5 million times. Now that they have absolute control they immediately give up because they can't get enough Republican vote? They don't need a single Democratic vote. No, they are giving up because it was never about repealing Obamacare. It was just about driving a wedge issue.

Their constituents fell for it, and are still too stupid that the Republicans were making complete asses of their constituents. The conservative right voter simply cannot admit to himself that he was duped, so he will continue to believe any ridiculous lie that denies he was duped.

82032   deepcgi   2017 Mar 28, 4:57am

You are mistaken. The USS Skate did indeed surface near the north pole on August 11, 1959 at 9:47 PM EDT and radioed the news back to London.

The following year the Skate surfaced again at the Pole - this time in March. So "yes" the ice was a bit heavier in winter.

Today about a third of the arctic basin is more than double the thickness than measured in the same regions in 1958. Subs also surfaced in open water at the pole in 1962 and 1987.

Here's the account from NavalHistory.org:

https://www.navalhistory.org/2011/08/11/uss-skate-ssn-578-becomes-the-first-submarine-to-surface-at-the-north-pole

And the USS Hawkbill surfaced with only the sail breaking through the ice at the pole in 1999.

It's all a game played with stats. Make the past colder, using basically gaussian correction and limited or cherry-picked data in recent years to create a greater that true increase.

Yes CO2 is a green house gas. Yes, we make a lot of it. The warming is real. But other factors we don't fully understand also warm and cool the planet independently of human interference. These factors are inconvenient to those wishing to get filthy rich from the planned carbon tax schemes.

We should panic more over clean air and clean water problems, ALSO worsened by human activity, than by the statistically demonstrable exaggerated warming currently popular with the PC crowd.

It wouldn't hurt to admit that the Medieval Warm Period WAS actually warm, especially given that the Southern Hemisphere was NOT proportionately colder during the same time period, and that some non-human factor cooled the entire northern hemisphere again without delayed carbon syncs of unproven freak events.

Long live YAD06. Some Manitoban Hockey player should find YAD and make a glorious symbolic hockey stick from his stunted branches - for no other tree in history has so changed the world (than the one that dropped the apple on Newton's noggin.

"errc says

Not really. GOPe voted for unanimously for repeal. The freedom caucus is NOT GOPe under pretty much any definition. The establishment narrative is just bollocks.

Trumpcare was a tax bill that would have redistributed wealth to the top 1% bigly, that had a little bit of healthcare stuck in there as well.

Agree. It's time to ditch the whole Global Warming--->Climate Change campaign. It's poisoned and the marketing department failed to sell it to the masses. It's time to regroup and rebrand. The next iteration ought keep it simple, and learn from the mistakes. It's The Pollution, dummies. Pollution is bad. We should all work to combat polluting our environment.

82035   Shaman   2017 Mar 28, 6:07am

Ah, but it's clear that the GOPe wasn't interested in a healthcare plan that actually benefitted the people, just the insurance companies and the Uber wealthy! Trump(or should I say Bannon) knew this and let Ryan lead the GOPe to a disaster just to discredit this faction of the Republicans who believe themselves to be in control.
They had to learn that they do NOT have a majority. Maybe on paper, but not where the deals get done. They are diametrically opposed to the reforms that the American people want to happen, and in this sense, the GOPe is just as great an enemy of freedom and the people as the Leftists. In fact, during the election they appeared to be allied in an effort to STOP TRUMP! Or had you forgotten already? Turning this train around is going to take time and lots of dealing. The one thing we know about Trump is that he does deals all day long. He doesn't give up, go to camp David, and sulk like a little girl for seven years when the opposing party won't support him. Trump is in the position where his desired reforms will be supported by roughly half the Republicans and half the Democrats. They just have to be convinced to stop playing partisan politics and start passing legislation that benefits their constituents!

Wow-the amount of rationalizing and revisionist history on here is mind-boggling. Trump absolutely wanted this deal and would have signed it proudly. There was no grand plan to discredit Ryan or the GOPe.

"The one thing we know about Trump is that he does deals all day long"

And he's finding out that making deals in Washington is a lot different than making deals in the boardroom. He's 0 for 1 so far. About to be 0-2 when tax reform fails and 0-3 when the wall fails too.

I'd say without even looking at other comments that the "win" was in not repealing--it would have been entirely on the republicans for better or worse and probably worse. It was foolish to try that quickly anyway. Something that took over a year to work out would have needed at least that length of time to replace in any cogent fashion.
