You can, of course, ignore the spread of misinformation. The price of choosing to ignore rather than discredit misinformation is that about once a century you get a Hitler that murders millions of people after rising to power on the popular tide of misinformed people. This is why misinformation is bad and it affects you even if you don't read it or participate in the political discussions. It's not a good thing for the general public to be misinformed.

I've never sold a house so far and have just been a purchaser. Does anyone know if its true that when you sell a house the profits are not capital gains; they are regular income? A mix of both?

If it's your primary residence, you pay no taxes on capital gains up to $250,000 if single and $500,000 if married.

If it's a rental, you pay capital gains taxes on every dollar of profit (minus carried over loses, sales related costs, etc)

The definitive explanation of why you should ignore talk radio addicts here and everywhere else you may go.

Actually, no. This is not a reason to ignore idiots and the falsehoods they spread. It's a reason to force those idiots to bear the consequences of their mistakes or lies. The wildebeest who kept saying log should have been made to walk on the "log". Similarly, the idiots who say climate change isn't happening should be made to pay for the costs of climate change.

The problem with ignoring idiots is that they get more and more power the more they are ignored instead of opposed. Then you get a Hitler, an idiot who kills millions, because rational people just chose to ignore the problem while it was small and solvable.

Idiots are problems. Ignoring problems is never the answer. Ignored problems fester and grow. They become big problems.

"The K-1s I receive for holdings in my IRA I typically file. It's a round file on the floor next to my desk that Waste Management conveniently picks up each week. Not much hassle there. Should I exceed the $1,000 UBTI limit in a single IRA account (unlikely), and my broker fails to send me the appropriate 990-T form (not really sure how likely since it's never happened), and I get audited (has also never happened), and the auditor notices the lack of a necessary 990-T form reporting UBTI (hard to notice what is not there, but I guess that's what they get paid for), if all those happen together, I guess I will just have to pay the fine."

I've always done my own taxes. Sort of a control freak in that way I guess.

I get it - my version is that I do my own bookkeeping with QB's for personal and Corp. But then I send that file off to the accountant who handles the rest and together we discuss financial moves forward. Accountant sends me back the finished return for review and done. I can highly recommend using a pro for this as it can be crucial. That is if you have somebody good.

Credit where it's due, you did warn about this issue, but on a shorter timeframe. I commented in a different thread about the latest report, will copy&paste here:

“If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.”

In America, neither major party has provided any useful answer to the question that matters: how to manage the climate.

"Seventy-four percent of the world's population will be exposed to deadly heatwaves by 2100 if carbon gas emissions continue to rise at current rates, according to a study published in Nature Climate Change. Even if emissions are aggressively reduced, the percent of the world's human population affected is expected to reach 48 percent."

Democrats propose spending vast fortunes on corrupt patronage networks, basically expanding and exploiting the issue rather than addressing it. Their proposals would transfer enormous wealth away from advanced countries that could actually develop climate management systems, empowering instead backwards religious kleptocracies and kickback schemes.

Republicans tend to deny climate change, so the argument tends to stay there.

Even among many independents, e.g. the green party, the issue seems tinged with anti-capitalism, white guilt, patriarchy-bashing, and original sin. Geo-engineering is derided as further man-made interference with mother nature.

"Everybody Talks About the Weather, But Nobody Does Anything About It."

I don't see the point of obsessing over future climate without proposing any realistic way of managing it.

Calling your opponents sub-human is not going to attract them to your cause.

More bullshit propaganda. I stand not to make a single cent by ending pollution and preparing for climate change, yet I'm for these things because the alternative is to fuck over ourselves and future generations. How the fuck am I "capitalizing" on climate change?

Meanwhile, polluters are literally stealing from us and our children. That's capitalizing on other people's pain.

What the fuck do you think any common American citizen can do about policy?
1. Talk about the problem and solutions.
2. Advocate good policies.
3. Vote for politicians who vote for good polices and against politicians who vote for bad policies.
4. Spread good ideas.
5. Counter misinformation with facts.

You're philosophy of "the everyday man has no power and therefore should disconnect from politics" is just plain stupid. Do I have to explain why?

From the World Food Program, Climate Impact on Food Security

Among the most significant impacts of climate change is the potential increase of food insecurity and malnutrition.

Climate change increases the frequency and intensity of some disasters such as droughts, floods and storms. This has an adverse impact on livelihoods and food security. Climate-related disasters have the potential to destroy crops, critical infrastructure, and key community assets, therefore deteriorating livelihoods and exacerbating poverty.

Sea-level will rise as a result of climate change, affecting livelihoods in coastal areas and river deltas. Accelerated glacial melt will also affect the quantity and reliability of water available and change patterns of flooding and drought.

Changes in climatic conditions have already affected the production of some staple crops, and future climate change threatens to exacerbate this. Higher temperatures will have an impact on yields while changes in rainfall could affect both crop quality and quantity.

Climate change could increase the prices of major crops in some regions. For the most vulnerable people, lower agricultural output means lower incomes. Under these conditions, the poorest people — who already use most of their income on food — sacrifice additional income and other assets to meet their nutritional requirements, or resort to poor coping strategies.

Climate-related risks affect calorie intake, particularly in areas where chronic food insecurity is already a significant problem. Changing climatic conditions could also create a vicious cycle of disease and hunger. Nutrition is likely to be affected by climate change through related impacts on food security, dietary diversity, care practices and health.

The climatic variability produced by more frequent and intense weather events can upset the stability of individuals’ and government food security strategies, creating fluctuations in food availability, access and utilization.

Your willful spreading of ignorance, apathy, and misinformation is going to kill millions. The best thing you can do for the world is to shut up.
