Once they're the party in power, they can't vote against things just to say that they're fighting the "liberal agenda", and will have to at least appear to be doing something to address unemployment and the deficit.
They must really want to give him a second term.
Of course, both unemployment and the deficit are going to self-correct anyway. Observers will dumbly think it had something to do with Obama and/or the republican-controlled congress, and will think that this is a good balance.
