Jesus did not believe in having a strong central government, hence he was not a socialist. He was a libertarian, one with deep care for others around him.
He cared not for the greed and gluttony so prevailing in the government and it's corruption. He simply cared for the common man.
No. Jesus and His followers did those things voluntarily, not under compulsion.
2 Corinthians 9:7
Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Was Jesus a Socialist?
He offered forgiveness of sin (free counseling with second chance opportunities)
He offered free healthcare (cured the sick and disabled without charge)
He helped the needy (welfare)
He helped the infirm and aged (social security)
He dispensed food without cost (food stamp program via bread and fish)
He helped the unemployed when he asked fishermen to give up their jobs to follow him (unemployment insurance)
He took handouts and got free lodging from folks where he traveled (socialism: mi casa is su casa)
He offered free education to those who followed him (wisdom and truth with no price tag for all who seek it)
Scripture quote:
Acts of the Apostles 2:
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common.
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
On a side note: Business gives tons of money to charity, which indicates that capitalism supports socialism.
