I have a rich black friend, about the same age as I am, but much richer than I am. Like me, he got a useful technical degree, but he invested in the stock market starting from an early age because of his father's good advice. My own father knew nothing about investing, so I didn't really catch on to what the stock market could do for me until I was 30 or so. My friend didn't get married or have a family, so he saved a boatload of money there too. His own financial success was pretty conventional: get a useful degree, invest in good companies, don't waste money.

He's kind of scary looking at first glance, like 6'5" and muscular, but that's just appearance. He's actually very pleasant to talk to, which you quickly figure out if you chat with him.

So I asked him if discrimination had been any significant impediment to his self-achieved success, and he doesn't seem to have an answer for that. Clearly it didn't stop him. My conclusion is that most of the hype about discrimination is bullshit. If you're motivated and stay on track, this country still works, no matter where you came from.

Dude, if you're reading this, very happy to get your perspective too.

I’ve seen a few of the regulars here suggest that racism doesn’t exist lol

Sure it exists. We can even quantify it in college/med school applications.

Anything the state propaganda factory hypes to death is certainly bullshit. My friend Curtis has a BS in electrical engineering, is an avid football fan, and one of the dorkiest guys I know, in a good way. He works in SW QA, has owned the same car ever since I met him, and lived in the same apartment forever, so his money and time are both well spent. No kids, girlfriend, grew up in South East San Diego. Ethnicity had dick to do who he is, or his success.

When it comes to conversations about that ethnic disparity, a white friend of mine is the one who brings up that stuff the most often. He's also the one who prefers rap, and wants to seem cooler than he is. People who obsesses about ethnicity and "race", are either racists, or self-loathers.

Lol, yes, there is definitely discrimination against whites and Asians in college and grad school admissions.

Asians sued Harvard for discrimination against them:

But the truth seems to change so much. I thought Dems were the elite snobs that looked down upon the average Joe.

Trump supporters really need to make up their mind about which narrative they are going with. Are Dems lazy welfare queens or rich, limousine, soy boys?

Slaves and masters, just like the Democrats of 160 year ago. Nothing has changed.

Equal rights, not equal outcomes. Minorities and women have had the same rights as White Men for decades. There will always be good looking men who will get more pussy (without paying for it) than any of us combined. That's not fair...shall we scar up their face to make things more equal?

The US should be a place where everyone has equal opportunity.

Equal opportunity is a tyrrsnical fever dream. Equal rights and representation under the law is the goal.

Currently, conservatives, men, whites, and asians are being oppressed. Are you ok w this?

As they should. Any idea what happened?

Limiting Asian acceptance to universities is racist as fuk. Just terrible.

I agree. But I'd also say that we should take care of our own people. Lots of people are not able to compete for one reason or another. Differences in talent, disease, other unfortunate circumstance.

So the big question is then "Who are our people?"

Diversity divides us. Diversity destroys community. What we need is to get back to a melting pot ideal of a common national culture, so we can all feel we are in it together.

This won’t be possible so long as The Church demands to interject in America’s Secular, Liberal way of life
40   Shaman   2018 Mar 22, 4:24pm

Equal opportunity is a laudable goal, but it’s unattainable. Even should all bias be removed as to culture or ethnicity (and I do think this is another laudable goal), the accident of birth will put people with the same ability into households of differing wealth and more or less effective culture. Of the two, culture might be the more defining. A poor person raised with good work ethic will likely succeed to a moderate to large level. While a rich person raised poorly with a poor work ethic is probably doomed to failure, addiction, and eventual poverty.

@patrick Your rich black friend mentioned that he credits a lot of his success to his dad and his family. That’s another data point pointing out that success is more likely with a good family culture.

Well said. There may be laws that state equal rights etc. however reality does not always play by the rules.

Yes and it has nothing to do with race.

Racism is nonsense. Those who cling to it, whether they're white supremacists or BLM, are out of touch. Culture is what really matters. The most positive aspects of Western culture, the hard work, embracing scientific curiosity, flexible thinking, respect for individual rights, etc. tend to lead to success. There's no guarantee of success, faced with the corruption and abuse of power that reflects the worst of Western culture. Based on the limited info provided by Patrick, it sounds like his friend has done well embracing the positives.

49   WatermelonUniversity   2018 Mar 23, 10:03pm

anyone working with blacks or living in a black neighborhood knows exactly why blacks are lagging behind everyone else.

they are dumb and lazy. but the worse part about blacks are their animal behaviors. they lack the mental capacity to control their primitive urges.

maybe they face more racism than other minority groups, but they should ask themselves WHY? maybe if they learned to behave like humans...

you think IQ is learned? how do you explain Eskimos living in the middle of nowhere having IQ of 90+ while some groups in Africa having IQ in the 60s?

blacks need to accept that they can only do low end work and be grateful to whites for they are not starving in Africa.

Great, then you agree that unequal outcomes is perfectly acceptable. For example, I'm glad you agree the income variations between sexes and races is perfectly acceptable in a liberal society.

Since you agree w the above I'm sure you agree that affirmative action is terrible for everyone and should end, whether on our college campuses, or in any employment arena.

Of course. Like I said earlier--one's success should be determined by their abilities and effort.

Possibly. It depends on the reason for the disparity.

CBOEtrader says

Maybe. Affirmative action exists to try to get the US closer to a country with equal opportunities. If it's shown that it is no longer needed and minorities are given the same opportunities as whites, then I'd say it should end.
54   anonymous   2018 Mar 24, 9:58pm

Can you prove that equal rights do not exist? Affirmative Action should’ve been eliminated from the beginning.

HappyGilmore says

You can't prove this. This is why you need to listen to doctor haidt.

You can however prove that all people have the same rights (except for whites, men, and conservatives who are currently fighting systemic oppression) and that less qualified women and minorities consistently take opportunities from more qualified candidates.

How about we try treating everyone the same? Ya know, embrace actual liberal values
56   anonymous   2018 Mar 25, 7:15am

A great myth that the Left believes is that all races and genders have the same abilities and should have the same opportunity to be successful. Blacks, in general, may not be as built or tuned to have software engineer jobs for example, but they sure as hell dominate the NFL and NBA. The same goes for women and STEM...maybe they just don't have a desire to be in technical fields because their brains or personalities aren't drawn to it. Genders and races are NOT the same, so don't expect the same outcomes.
57   Shaman   2018 Mar 25, 7:26am

I hardly see any black kids playing baseball in my son’s little league. Maybe one or two in five hundred. But I feel that’s because Baseball is a sport where you need a dad to practice with you so you get better. Again, it’s back to family culture.

Difficult to prove. But, I'd say someone coming to pat.net would leave pretty certain that racism is still alive and well in the US

So you mean we should get rid of preferential treatment for blacks and Hispanics? Currently they have much greater educational and employment opportunities than whites or Asians do, which is easily proven by looking at the test scores they need for admission to universities, or the qualifications they need to get a job.

But Liberals believe they should receive the same pay and incomes.

They believe we should take from the 1% so these people, on the lower end of the race and gender scale, can have the same lifestyle as the evil 1%ers that actually WORKED for their money.

Not really. Let's look at elementary school opportunities. Or High School opportunities.

The universities are trying to make up for the that preferential treatment.

I'd be curious to see the qualification for job proof that you can easily show though.
