The students and their parents have nothing to do with this. I blame the teachers 100%. They need to make teaching more engaging, more fun, and most of all, more profitable for the students.

Well, with all that big money and the state paying them automatically for a Master's Degree (and paying FOR the Master's)... plus the big fat pension...
Maybe, like the private sector, results should be tied to payout instead of mere number of years served. What other profession solely pays based on years of employment? Not doctors, dentists, or lawyers...
The students and their parents have nothing to do with this. I blame the teachers 100%. They need to make teaching more engaging, more fun, and most of all, more profitable for the students.
Would you be in favor of publicly funded adult learning classes? I think we're talking about illegals here
The students and their parents have nothing to do with this. I blame the teachers 100%. They need to make teaching more engaging, more fun, and most of all, more profitable for the students
I disagree. If parents won't hold their kids accountable how can teachers?
I disagree. If parents won't hold their kids accountable how can teachers?
If the teachers do their job right, the students don't have to do any home work, in fact if the teachers are good enough, student don't even need to attend.
I noticed a definite gradient based on levels of residents who are immigrants, with the highest levels of ignorance being where the highest levels of illegal immigrants live. In fact, West Virginia is kicking our ass.
Also, all the deep red states but Kentucky aren’t even in the top 20. Who’s ignorant now, lefties? Clearly the Left is drawing voters from a DEEP WELL OF IGNORANCE!!!
I get an extra $500/ year for my masters degree. And no, they don't pay for your school. Not at all. Nice try though. What else can you make up ?
Marcus, you better call your Teacher's Soviet Komissar. The only way you could be making only $500 extra for an MA is if you were a first year teacher.
They need to make teaching more engaging, more fun
Learning is NOT fun. Typing garbage on ipads is, but that is not learning. And yes, if parents do not care about education, teachers will fail. There is not enough individual teacher face-time with students to teach everyone - kids come with widely different abilities and backgrounds.
I noticed a definite gradient based on levels of residents who are immigrants
Agreed with illegal part, but try Indian or Chinese immigrant kid educational levels and achievements vs native-born American. Asians have a religious view of educational achievements - and this also shows that parents matter more than teachers.
Schools are obsolete anyway. They should only be K-8. In 9th, you should learn a trade or learn to study on your own for college. In fact, college courses can start in the 9th Grade if you have room temperature IQ and the least bit of discipline.
You have to learn to self-study or you won't be effective in life, whether you're an electrician or an engineer.
Public schools are a failure. Utter failure. One only needs to look at LAUSD (2nd largest public school budget in the country), and then look at the standardized testing scores for math and reading.
That overall statistic doesn't speak to the effectiveness of the California education system in any way. In the latest 18-to-24 years old cohort only 1.7% of Californians have less than 9th grade ed, same as the rest of the country. Better than Texas or Florida.
It's still bad if they drop out at 10th grade. You're not really providing any information to counter the fact that California has a really low graduation rate for the money being spent.
state paying them automatically for a Master's Degree (and paying FOR the Master's)
??
I get an extra $500/ year for my masters degree. And no, they don't pay for your school. Not at all. Nice try though. What else can you make up ?
If you only get $500 for your masters degree, your union negotiated a crappy contract. My union, it's about an $8k difference. I'm wondering why you are all gung ho pro union when they clearly didn't negotiate well for you.
Marcus, you better call your Teacher's Soviet Komissar. The only way you could be making only $500 extra for an MA is if you were a first year teacher.
It's an MS, and you're wrong.
Apparently you don't understand your graph. It's true that for classes in Math, beyond a bachelors degree I get points that apply to my salary. For example the Masters program I was in required 20 hours of undergrad Math classes, beyond the calculus sequence to start the program. My bachelors was in business. I also have taken enough CS courses that are independent of my degrees to be close to what a CS major does for a bachelors in CS.
So yes, when I started I got a lot of salary points for those classes, and some of the classes in my masters program too. I pretty much maxed out salary points when I started.
But the Masters degree itself, I on'y get $500 per year for. I'm pretty sure that I would know how this works better than you.
The students and their parents have nothing to do with this. I blame the teachers 100%. They need to make teaching more engaging, more fun, and most of all, more profitable for the students.
We have the most welfare recipients along with the worst education. Don't think it's just a coincidence.
If you only get $500 for your masters degree, your union negotiated a crappy contract. My union, it's about an $8k difference. I'm wondering why you are all gung ho pro union when they clearly didn't negotiate well for you.
Pensions. Why care for a lousy $500 when you can get $millions in pension.
My union, it's about an $8k difference. I'm wondering why you are all gung ho pro union when they clearly didn't negotiate well for you.
Two things I would say. I'm not really THAT gung ho on the union.
Secondly, the comparison to the 8K you get is probably not relevant. To compare we would have to take into account how teachers are compensated for all (relevant) education after their bachelors. I'm not that curious, to compare - but read my comment 23.
But the Masters degree itself, I on'y get $500 per year for. I'm pretty sure that I would know how this works better than you.
Then your school is wayyyyy out of step with the rest of California. Even first year teachers with Masters get thousands more than a Bachelor degree holder. Like I said, call your Teacher's Soviet kommissar.
How would you know ? For an internet troll you sure think you know a lot more than you do. . Oh, wait, I forgot that's part of the definition of an internet troll.
My degree is a Masters in Mathematics (from the MAth department - from a "group one" school in Math) . You shouldn't project your own inadequacies on to others.
Then your school is wayyyyy out of step with the rest of California. Even first year teachers with Masters get thousands more than a Bachelor degree holder.
I explained it pretty clearly. I'm not going to try again. I believe you could understand if you wanted to.
Another aspect of being an internet troll is that you aren't it it to listen or even comprehend in the slightest what the other person is saying. Why the fuck did I take the time to explain it to you ?
The very fact that teachers are public sector employees almost assures lots of wasted money for little results.
True. As any Trump supporter understands selfishness and malice are the only things that drive humans.
AS long as teachers can mooch off the government and get their awesome pay and live (AND RETIRE!!) in Caligulan splendor, they obviously could give a fuck as to whether they are serving the interests of the children they supposedly serve. I'm sure that when the typical teacher reflects on their practice and on the job they are doing, and whether or not they are doing well for their students, it's only for a few seconds, as they laugh their way to the bank, and think "who gives a fuck!"
How would you know ? For an internet troll you sure think you know a lot more than you do. . Oh, wait, I forgot that's part of the definition of an internet troll.
Education Majors have some of the highest GPAs, but rank in the bottom 40% of standardized testing. It's called Grade Inflation - and I've seen the coursework, it's basket weaving.

I explained it pretty clearly. I'm not going to try again. I believe you could understand if you wanted to.
You didn't explain. I put up actual charts of California School "Step and Ladder" Payscales. They're readily available and they all pretty much look the same. Nobody in California is getting merely $500/month for a Master's Degree. Other posters have also told you this is the case.
The students and their parents have nothing to do with this. I blame the teachers 100%. They need to make teaching more engaging, more fun, and most of all, more profitable for the students.
People would be wrong to blame the teachers. Its not their fault other than their political beliefs lead to stupid stuff.
They should blame the sanctuary policies that result in non enforcement of immigration laws.
Classy, dude. Maybe try to make your insults a little more creative next time?
Well, I could use larger and longer words, but then both of you wouldn't understand them. Just tryin' to keep it simple. After all, I'm here to help!!!!!

Marcus, do you really teach math?
California is close to the Median Spend of about $11k per student. 26th in the Country. You can also infer this from your own chart.
Makes you wonder what California does with their lavish tax revenue.
