You decide, America. Think long and hard.

Americans would run out of avocados in three weeks if Trump shut down the border and imports from Mexico were stopped, said the president of the largest distributor and grower of avocados in the world. https://t.co/5pB7xIKLGu

I think the WALL! is a boondoggle to distract attention from solutions that would actually work.

True to some degree, but it also gets people talking about the possibility of imprisoning the employers of illegals, the best solution.

Another benefit: all kinds of American companies that have been happily outsourcing to Mexico to take advantage of lower wages and environmental laws are going to get nervous about not being able to keep their supply chain running.

This is excellent, because even the worry about the supply chain will discourage future dependence on Mexico by US companies. Trump does not even have to actually close the border to see a benefit to US workers from the mere threat of doing it.

Another method would to stop money transfers from illegals back to Mexico.

wtf are they worried about, in 12 years, we can grow avocados in 35 states right?

Mexico is scrambling to comply with Trump's wishes to secure the border, afraid Trump will make good on his promise to shut the border down if the president of Mexico fails to stem the tide of refugees. Instead of attending to the northern border with the U.S., El Presidante is securing his southern border. Will Trump do it. Just do it!

Sorry, I hate avocados. But they do seem to correlate with........

I guess correlation isn't causation. And I shouldn't hate on a fruit (or vegetable or mineral or whatever this abomination is) just because it gives me severe stomach aches.

It's amazing that some people don't understand that threats are all part of negotiations...If you don't do this, I'm going to do this...Trump threatens to close the border and people instantly go into a self imposed fake panic. They imagine all kinds of dire consequences just because of a threat...NO AVOCADOS! lol

Do you know what JIT stands for? Just in time. The cars we build in this country, guess where they get parts from? Yes some come from Mexico. Guess when they get them, yes, Just In Time. The avocados is going to hit the fan if Trump closes the border, he will be committing political suicide so please Trump don't flip flop on this one.

People are gonna be like, holy shit, we close the border for a few days and all this shit happens? Now I see why NAFTA is a bad idea, we're dependent on a Narco State for basics, that's pretty fucking stupid and dangerous.

Yeah, it's not like this country ever built Fords or Chevy's on it's own.

Be Careful! The "Trump ain't gonna do it" claims have seldom worked out well.

"He ain't gonna shutdown the government"
"He ain't gonna use an Executive Order"
etc.

And for car companies to think long and hard about where they want to manufacture their cars!

One who think this is just about avocados has shit for brains.

Agreed...And yet, our shit for brains media decided that should be the main focal point:
You should foward your thoughts about JIT to the "shit for brains" media

Nixon and Reagan tried closing the border to pressure Mexico – here’s what happened

On April 4, the president backpedaled and instead gave Mexico a year to stop the flow of drugs across the border. If that didn’t happen, he threatened, auto tariffs would be imposed – and the president suggested he might still close the border if that didn’t work.

If Trump ever follows through on his threat and puts up a closed sign at the southern border, it wouldn’t be the first time. Twice in the last half-century the U.S. has tried to use the border to force Mexico to bend to America’s will. The ruse failed both times.

Operation Intercept

In 1969, President Richard Nixon launched Operation Intercept in hopes of forcing Mexico to collaborate more fully with his administration’s policies to stop the flow of drugs – one of his campaign promises.

Although it technically wasn’t a full border closure, it required customs agents to search every car, truck and bus entering the United States. This caused long delays and a significant drop in economic activity in both countries. Border businesses and politicians begged Nixon to end .

Meanwhile, Mexican leaders paid lip service to U.S. demands, based on my archival research. They highlighted the progress they had already made in their anti-drug operations and vowed to “continue with increasing intensity.”

Mexico even said it was willing to accept American anti-drug aid – such as aircraft and sophisticated weaponry – in order to help the Nixon administration fight its drug war.

In the end, however, nothing substantial changed. The border reopened after three weeks.

History repeats - Operation Intercept II

The war on drugs also inspired President Ronald Reagan’s partial border closure in 1985. Aptly named Operation Intercept II, it suffered a similar fate.

The Mexican authorities were unable to find a kidnapped Drug Enforcement Administration agent, and the White House once again decided to use the border to force them into more vigorous action, closing nine checkpoints.

Ordinary Mexicans saw this border closure as yet another form of “Yankee imperialism.” They wondered how the disappearance of one agent could cause such an uproar when hundreds of Mexicans had been killed as a result of our “war on drugs.” The abducted agent was later found dead.

Although the border was reopened within a matter of days, once again, the shutdown severely hurt the border economy – as well as relations between the two countries.
