A lot of people claim to be "socially liberal" but "fiscally conservative".

So why don't the Democrats just adopt the GOP's position of exponentially increasing debt ("Reagan proved that deficits don't matter") and drop any idea of raising taxes. They'd have a winning combination of low taxes and social liberalism.

Why doesn't the GOP embrace the minority voter and gay rights? They could parlay their (unearned) reputation for tight-fisted fiscal governance into a more expansive coalition.

How do the Democrats "win" by addressing the tax issue? How do the Republicans "win" by alienating the minorities? What do they gain?
