I wonder if they expected this to cause mass division among their customer base? It seems they've been losing market share for a while now, and maybe they see the writing on the wall and realize that they can't stop this recent rise in aggressive competition in razors which is eroding both their market share and margins. If so, this could be an attempt at a hail mary. They figure if they do this, they will cause division into 2 groups - those who really really love them, and those who hate them. Some customers will be lost, but the fanboy group could become VERY loyal, and less likely to be lost to future attrition to the shave clubs, and also be willing to endure a price hike.

I don't know what their margins look like, but sometimes a small bump in price can easily double the margin. i.e., if they sell a razor for $1.00, but make it for $0.80, they profit $0.20. If they slightly raise the price to $1.20, they now profit $0.40 - double. Doubling your profit means you can cut revenue in half but still make the same money. This could be a ploy to increase loyalty to make their customers more willing to endure price hikes.

...Or it might just be a big mistake by letting their marketing team get a bit too lefty.
