Those guys in Redmond are geniuses.
With older versions of Windows, and maybe with the new one also, you couldn't even copy and paste the text of the error message. Evidently somebody didn't want you to Google the message and find a solution, if you might otherwise subscribe to premium support.
Don't bother posting "Get a MAC".
Get anything besides Windows. Better?
OS/2, but the hardware support is a bit old.
After using gnome classic on top of ubuntu 12 my wife hates windows and os x (the worst ever) with a passion.
Linux.
Try getting the wife to adopt Linux though.
Try getting your senior parents to use Linux. Much harder.

No harder than anything else with a keyboard made after 1960
Windows 3.1 worked, it worked enough that by time Windows 95 was released it created the biggest lines in retail history when it launched.

The shell looks decent. Unfortunately, the video doesn't go into the OS itself. I've been lucky enough not to have to deal with Unix in nearly 10 years, and I hated it back in college.
Still, the various Linux implementations might have come a long way since then. I just need to relearn all the Unix and Linux stuff before I'd be willing to switch to one of those Linux distros. I need to know what's under the hood.
However, I'd be more interested in running Android as a desktop OS. Android uses a small Linux distro as its kernel and the Java platform as its outer OS. For most things, you can be blissfully unaware of the Linux kernel as the Java platform handles many low-level tasks without sacrificing high-level programming constructs.
Theoretically, you should be able to do Android programming on a Google Nexus tablet with Eclipse, which is written in Java. So running Android on a desktop should work well. Of course, you're gearing yourself towards Android apps instead of Windows apps. For home grown things and personal use, that's fine. But it could be a pain for gaming and business apps. Perhaps a dual boot Window 8.1 and the latest Android...
Could an Android desktop replace your Windows PC?
Android PCs and other Windows-alternative desktops are for real
Run Android on Your Netbook or Desktop
Try getting the wife to adopt Linux though.
my wife loves her macbook air, and i love having a unix shell on it.
and i actually set up linux for my mother such that she could turn it on and the browser would start. that's all she needed because she just did web-based email and browsing.

Don't bother posting "Get a MAC". If I wanted a doorstop, I wouldn't pay more than a dollar for it.
