But still, some 13-15K ppl still attend those games so it's not like a zero attendance event.

I'm not trying to marginalize those who are American soccer fans.

I'm only injecting reason as to whey the fanbase isn't as big as the American big 3 sport leagues.

NCAA does have a collegiate soccer league but like the MLS, the attendance is low, in comparison to the other sports.

Football is a working class game that has no connection to higher education in the rest of the world and has only fairly recently been adopted by the chattering middle classes. Sports in the US appear (at least to an outsider) to revolve around the colleges. They certainly seem to be huge money making institutions that then directly feed into the professional leagues. It's a very different system to most (all?) other countries.

Soccer is clearly not popular in America as it is in Europe and the rest of the world. It is, however, gaining in popularity, and one day will be just as popular.
For now, it is regarded as a sport for liberals, which is why it's knocked by the likes of Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.
If you must knock it, don't knock it on the grounds of race, because that is pretty stupid. Knock it because it can be boring or low scoring, or you are just not into it.
But it's still a sport. Even my dog loves it. She cheats, and hogs the ball, but she loves it.

Here in Houston we have the Dynamo. They had their own stadium built that hold 22,000. They pretty much play to sold out games and a few of the ones who buy tickets even have green cards.

My point was about the other sports rather than football. I presume a lot of their power and popularity comes from the way they've been adopted by colleges and seemingly transformed into a college funding business all their own (at least for two of them). Football (soccer) is an extremely popular sport in the US amongst the very young (as in actually playing it), but then the competitive side of it appears to fall away as those children get older.

I don't think soccer will ever beat NFL in terms of rating and popularity but it can definitely challenge baseball which is having a very tough time with the younger under 35 demographic (mainly issues of games taking too long and aftermath of steroid era). Whether it can beat NBA, I am not sure but wouldn't be surprised if it did. One thing that is going against soccer is that for regular season the MLS has subpar talent vs regular season league in most of europe and the fans will not embrace a sport that is de-facto minor league status in the home country while NBA, NFL and MLB has the best athletes in the world for regular season competition.

My region is a baseball state so I think the Red Sox will always draw the most fans. And now that baseball has a lot of latin players, it's highly likely that it'll maintain its perch, despite the juicing scandals.

NFL is so national and multi-regional that it think its position is secure for a while.

The problem the NBA is facing is that they've been living in the post-Jordan era for more than 15 years and I think it's tough to maintain a type of perennial interest, based around the hype of a potential successor to His Airness, which still hasn't occurred yet despite all the malarkey of the Kobe/LeBron show. Thus, b-ball needs a bit of an overhaul, before Durant and future all stars, fail to live up to the great Michael's playoff stats sheets, and future generations get bored of the next showboat.
