Self-solving problem!

The simplest solution to this problem is to link the guaranteed student loan program to the H1B visa program. If employers say they can't find enough people with particular qualifications, then accredited academic programs can get guaranteed student loan money only for students getting degrees that match those qualifications, and the guarantee applies only subject to the ability of the federal government to collect income taxes from graduates.

There shouldn't be a guaranteed student loan if the degree doesn't prepare students to do something that will enable them to repay the loan.

Otherwise the current situation results from a super-abundance of students who are facing conflicting pressures. Economically, they face a lifetime of non-dischargeable debt whatever degree they pursue. Socially, they face peer pressure and highly paid encouragement to pursue whatever is fashionable. Add the fact that many of these kids have been on so many Rx psychotropics since childhood ("Thanks Medicaid+CHIP!") that they have no memory of even one clear-headed day in their whole lives, and you see university students acting crazy and some of their non-university counterparts getting shot by police.

BTW, I'd really like to see a serious study comparing the incidence of psychotropic Rx in these students, persons shot by police, and the general population. Anecdotally, correlation is very strong, and I suspect causation in both directions, i.e. the drugs potentiate and can paradoxically amplify whatever pre-existing conditions the kids might have had.

Will not help, as many employers will not hire from many lower-ranked "accredited" institutions, so graduates possessing even supposedly good degrees, such as engineering, will still be hosed.

Simplest solution would be to cap federally-guaranteed loans to 8 or 10K/year/4 years. It would "magically" bring down tuition at many (most) schools to that number. Also, abolishing of SJW-producing departments (gender, ethnic studies) would help, but that has to be done at state level.

Respectfully, I would not abolish those departments, but rather put them in perspective, like art history. There are different ways of looking at the world, and it's useful to take a class in art history and a class in critical studies, but I don't perceive a dire shortage of degrees in either field. Your suggestion to cap federally guaranteed loans would work better than banning departments, especially if the guarantee can be further limited based on % who repay (or can be made to repay) during some number of years after graduation.

With respect to undergraduates, probably less are on "prescribed" psychotropics, but many use Adderall (which is both stimulant and anti-ADD drug) non-medically to be able to concentrate.

From literature: up to 30% of college students use Adderall non-medically. The numbers vary significantly by school, with the greatest proportion of users at private and "elite" universities.

Respecfully, I would say they are being set up for failure by a policy environment where the federal government is diverting too much money into subsidizing (a) too many psychotropic prescriptions and (b) too many degrees relative to the number of careers that require those degrees.

I do not think that happens unless there is something special at that school. As far as I know, there is a provision in Texas that Mexico nationals get in-state tuition (this is historical, and in many schools goes back nearly 100 years - UTEP for example), but I have not heard of similar law in Washington.
