This is how I remember it (and I just saw it this week).

SPOILERS BELOW

The 1st Order begins attacking the Rebel Fleet and decimates it. The Rebels attempt a getaway, Leia gets blown out of the ship's bridge and her along with Admiral Freaking Ackbar are killed instantly, or so we think.

I felt JJ Abrams just went overboard with Last Jedi and totally ruined the movie and possibly the franchise. Next film I will definitely see on NetFlix or Rent, but definitely not dropping evening pass money, or wasting an evening.

Sadly - I too got a bit of a political vibe, but I got it WAY more from the first one than the recent one. Heres my take on all the women in the movies:

Rey - Ive grown to tolerate her but was instantly put off by her instantly uber capable HERO complex. She lives in the equivalent of the inland empire, salvaging garbage - no education no training - nothing. Yet within days she is capable of flying the millennium falcon AND incapacitate the sniveling apparently weak as shit young darth vader guy in a LIGHT SABER DUEL??? Ridiculous.

Young Asian Chick - slightly put off, but whatevs had this been the extent of the catering to the empowered womens thing, I would have had no problem with the franchise.

Laura Dern - honestly, I didn't give a shit about her and really didn't get anything political from the fuck off Po exchange. I figured they put her in to get killed so who cares.

Old Leia - slightly annoyed by the I can use the force to escape zero gravity death thing, but other than that, I frankly really liked her. She really was kind of a bad-ass and would have been a great symbol to women if you really felt like you needed one. I mean she was the LEADER of the free world, is this not enough?

Side note - I was overall a meh as to both star wars, but I freaking LOVED Rogue 1. The felicity jones character was your strong independent woman and I got zero political vibe from her story line whatsoever.

There are a couple of good videos that breakdown/analyze the latest Star Wars release. Sargon's is pretty funny and Film Theory does a good job looking at the fan/critic disconnect. Her fixing the Millennium Falcon without any prior experience, beating Kylo in a duel (and Luke Skywalker!) is actually pretty unbelievable. This is a pretty good video review.

On IMDB, Last Jedi is ranked only above Phantom Menace (which featured Jar Jar binks), and slightly above Attack of the Clones. So it's obvious even Star Wars fans themselves are universally split on the film.

As far as I'm concerned, it's only the original Series for me. Everything else is BS. As a kid I read some of the extended universe stuff which wasn't bad. I can't consider The Last Jedi canon unless Episode 9 is so damn good it makes everything make sense.

Another thing I just thought about with Last Jedi.

In ROTJ, Luke refuses to kill his father. He even tosses his light saber to the ground because he senses that there is still good in Vader/Anakin. Anakin is responsible for killing most of the Jedi (including younglings), and probably has killed millions during the war with the Rebels.

YET in Last Jedi, he's ready to slice his nephew in half due to some vague vision of him engaging with the dark side?

It's like Rian Johnson never saw Episode 4-6 at all!

Don't understand your logic here. The movie is universally divisive to fans. What exactly are SJW's "winning"? If half the audience tunes out, does that not inherently mean they've "lost influence"? Rian Johnson got signed for 3 movies with Disney (a contract worth triple digit millions to him), the way to reduce this guy's SJW influence is to simply not tune in. Look at what happened to the NFL this season, or CNN's ratings. I'm certainly not paying for another Star Wars ticket. I'm almost at the point that I have zero interest in Star Wars as long as Disney owns it.

That's all people are saying here, and you seem to be reading way too much into criticisms of the movie. It was just bad (for many people, not yourself, you seemed to like it and that's fine), and it sucks they ruined a license that many of us grew up with. You've answered you own subliminal question here in a sense. Why on earth, should a scifi movie be DIVISIVE! That is my logic. You hate the movie, that's cool. I'll try to clarify what I'm getting at here hopefully. The new Star Wars is a FULL grown redwood, 200 years old. It is what it is. You can hate it. You can think it sucks. The problem is that redwood (fully developed SJW) is dropping the seeds/cones of future redwoods (baby/teenage/college SJW's) and has been for a while. It's fine to hate that old redwood, but guess what, it's been growing it's babies left and right while you've been focused on how bad that big old redwood has been.

We need to focus on the seeds of the problem to fix it. Politicizing the mature tree ain't accomplishing nothing. This is why I don't like reviews of this movie pulling in the SJW stuff. If you don't want to buy another ticket or own the movie, then do that. I never said don't. Boycotts can work. Money matters.

Quick note, coming from the guy with a star wars name and avatar, we need to stop glorifying the originals. Great nostalgic movies for sure. But let's be realistic, they're not good movies in the technical sense, especially on the acting front. They are entertaining.

It's called character development. She should have discovered the force and slowly learned its abilities with Luke. That's what made ESB so intriguing was seeing Luke learn from master Yoda.

I think TFW had some good setups. Teased Rey's parents, so we were thinking "wow might get to know more about her in Last Jedi." They could have explored this.
