On Wednesday, March 20, the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge sent the following tweet:

Jordan Peterson requested a visiting fellowship at the Faculty of Divinity, and an initial offer has been rescinded after a further review.

— Faculty of Divinity (@CamDivinity) March 20, 2019

Jordan Peterson is an academic and clinical psychologist who has taught at two of North America’s most prestigious research universities (Harvard University and the University of Toronto), and whose academic work is prominent, widely-cited, and non-controversial in his field (see a list of his research publications here). His courageous and articulate defense of free speech, of our political, cultural and religious inheritance, of unpopular but incontestable truths of science—especially biology—and his radical opposition to identity politics of any kind, including that of both Right and Left, have made him an iconic figure. But what is by far the most significant thing about Peterson is that he reaches vast numbers of young people, often through Biblical stories and ancient myths, with perennial truths—of freedom, responsibility, the dignity of the individual, the transcendence of beauty and suffering and, above all, the liberating nature of Truth itself.

Cambridge University seems to be pozzing itself into irrelevance.

Nice to know I am so well thought of someone gets up so early to launch personal attacks.

No, I'm criticizing your lack of an argument. You still have not made a single point, or even discussed the retarded article you dropped.

Try actually discussing something. It's why we're here (the rest of us at least)

My colleague Quigley is a better man than myself. Quigley expects too much.

I just want ONE point. Choose ONE example of JP's bad data or pseudo science. If there is a valid critique, let's hear a small sliver of it at least.

@Onvacation - I am usually disappointed with the same from yourself and others but then we can't all be climate change deniers and play games with posts about the ideal temperature for human habitation.

Don't care what u think, otherwise I would have you off ignore wouldn't I ?
33   anonymous   2019 Apr 8, 7:59am

Patrick - as soon as I saw the title and knowing a bit about Peterson I just has this feeling this was the new "darling" of the right and I was not disappointed.

Milo's replacement until the next one comes along. An intellectual who has spent years without much of any attention or recognition is suddenly the new messiah.

It wasn't that long ago at all that Milo was the one being crucified by the evil liberal left, if Peterson turns out to have some sexual dalliances or other skeletons that are not in keeping with the expected image, will he be next to be tossed under the bus?

Controversy sells books. Not too excited or moved by the NYT times review either. Then again I suspect the majority of those books are bought by the "target audience"

Kind of ironic actually in that normally it is the professor types that are under the attack here until one takes a stance on gender identity and the
on air interview which everyone here is raving about because "he showed her"...

Actually his degree is normally under attack on here as well so I just don't get the hype other than that he embraces the right.

You clearly know nothing.
Peterson is not on the right, not religious, and not a fan of Donald Trump. He’s his own thing, something new under the sun. People who just want to crassly stereotype everyone into a pre-arranged category are stupid. Oddly, these people are the same ones who somehow believe themselves the champions of people who are routinely stereotyped. It’s kind of hilarious, and sad. But doesn’t humor come from a place of recognition that the human condition is sort of tragic?

Anyway, you should do your own research instead of just waiting for Maddow to tell you what you think.

Lolz!!!! So kak literally conflates criticisms of his lack of an argument as personal attacks while also literally doing nothing but personally attacking others... all while spamming articles and making exactly zero points, defending zero points.

Just amazing to watch this level of delusion.

These replies may be @Patrick 's new chatbot garage project. Would make more sense than a logical human writing these posts

Never mentioned Trump.

People who just want to crassly stereotype everyone into a pre-arranged category are stupid - you mean like the ones categorizing the left, gays, SJWs etc. or is that smart categorizing not done crassly?

He’s actually a liberal. But he’s garnered a lot of respect from conservatives because he has made the choice to speak the truth only, not dissembling, not hiding behind semantics to defend an indefensible point, but looking honestly at human behavior and social structures which attempt to regulate it. He’s the most honest man in psychology, and it’s the reason he’s garnered so much hate from the Leftists.

As you know, Leftists are left-leaning conservatives who hate the idea of someone holding different views than they do. They will commit any atrocity to silence free speech or free thought, and view promotion of their ideas or narratives as the highest virtue.

To such people, a free-thinking classical liberal like JP is complete anaethema. And to make things even worse, he’s promoting the heinous idea (especially to young directionless men) that they should take responsibility for their own lives and also take responsibility for other people in their power to assist.

Yes I read his book. A bit dense, but full of good ideas. And while the rules sometimes sound arbitrary, they’re underpinned by deep psychological truths, violated at your own peril.

In all fairness, when he goes off into Jungian dreamland, Peterson can be a bit wacky. Sometimes two snakes procreating is just two reptiles have sex.
That said, JBP is pretty solid with his science. If he's stating a conjecture or hypothesis, he'll usually be upfront about it.

The Left really has just one tactic that they use over and over: "misrepresent and shame" as James Damore put it.

1. misrepresent the point you are making
2. shame you for it, even though it is a misrepresentation of what you're saying

That is the holy high ground of the right.

You are either with us or against - America right or wrong.

Disagree and you are a commie, un-American, anarchist, subversive

Twist it up and restate even though it is a misrepresentation of what was said - be sure to invoke a god and or the bible - both if possible and call anyone not on board an Islamic sympathizer in addition to all of the other things

Does this guy or doesn't he have a problem with the movie Frozen for being SJW material ?

He says he is not of the alt-right, but has said, “If men are pushed too hard to feminize, they will become more and more interested in harsh, fascist political ideology.”

Same old shit, not a new anything, just a more PC version of Milo and Richard Spencer

Moi is a commie subversive for not agreeing with Peterson and questioning him or anyone on this thread who supports and believes in him.

The Left hates Evo Psych as much as they hate Judeo-Christianity.

Both postulate actors on the state of humanity that make a "Blank Slate" to socially engineer infeasible, albeit from different angles.
58   marcus   2019 Apr 8, 9:22pm

I've been a big fan of JP since a good while before he blew up.

He's not comparable at all to the provocateur Milo. That's just silly.

You could watch Peterson's debates with Sam Harris if you wanted to learn more about him. Or many of his lectures that have been posted going way back. His big academic book was "Maps of Meaning."

He likes to talk about Dostoevsky, Nietzsche, Jung, archetypes, Myths, and value that stories have in our finding meaning in life.

He makes very solid arguments against Marxism and certain aspects of post modernism as it was twisted in the decades after marxism was a proven failure. . His thesis (which is only that) is that a lot of the craziness on the left can be traced to these.

I'm way oversimplifying, but the reason for his popularity is that his message fits with these crazy times. As for his being a darling of the right ? To the extent that that's true, its a very good thing, becasue he is a moderating influence. If wish the right worshiped JP, becasue he would point them in the right direction.

But also, the extent that a guy like him can be considered right wing, is purely a rather extreme example of how fucked up the left is these days. That is, any leftists that believe that are way too close minded, and not part of a left that I want to have anything to do with. . It underlines the departure of the left from what it meant 50 years ago.

The truth is, JP is a pragmatst and very middle of the road. The only time I've see him show a slight bit of what seemed like right wing bias was when answering a question about climate change. He didn't deny it, but he questioned how we can deal with it any faster than we are. And he questioned it in general. Sadly, I felt that one time, he was sucking up to the right a little bit, but maybe it was an off day, that he could manage a more balanced answer to an audience question.

Still I'm very impressed with the guy. Very quick on his toes, extremely intelligent, and he'll give you food for thought if you aren't closed minded. I agree with him 98% of the time. And I have a reputation of being a liberal around here. Go figure.

Maybe one of the main reasons I like him is the same reason Kak doesn't. That is, I like his view on religion. He makes the argument that I tried to make with Dan years ago, much better than I ever did. Very well constructed and totally consistent with my pov. Where as we know from recent posts that Kak is a hard core dogmatic atheist. JP's big debate with Sam Harris is centered on this subject. I'm guessing it's something Kak would never listen to, even though Harris is advocating very well for Kak's view.

If it's not that, then the other reason some leftists don't like him, is that he takes issue with the ugly fucked up part of the left. That is the over the top identity nonsense that prevents the left from being politically successful. That's my other favorite thing about JP. I want to see that part of the left (which is mostly on college campuses) squashed before it grows. Jp's insights and popularity are helping in that battle - especially as he gets main stream popularity.

No - the socialism so near and dear to the hearts of the GOP voters like the farmers in fly over country who realize all of this flooding is putting a world of hurt on them, on top of the tariffs so now they want the government to come in and bail them out.
