I used to go there often as a child, and don't recal seeing any homeless there. I recently returned there for a week, and was shocked at how many homeless there were. Only certain cities in the Denver area though - some cities don't allow it, so you don;t see any.

When I visited the Waikiki part of Hawaii (main tourist strip on the main tourist island) I was absolutely amazed at the huge police presence. I assume it was to keep the homeless from panhandling and/or robbing the tourists. The city must have been spending so much money on the police force. I can't think this is a cost-effective way of keeping law and order.

Nearby Lefty-run Boulder, CO has a large contingent of homeless, mostly panhandling in the city center.
I was there in the winter a couple of years ago (Eldora has a great new ski lift) and was surprised at all the vagrants wandering around in the snow.

When I went to Denver a couple of years ago, the Grey Line tour showed all kinds of vagrants and homeless right around the capital area. They all wear these big, fluffy coats because of the weather. Also, I went to a mini mart in an area of Aurora. Pure ghetto crazy place where I stopped. I didn't expect that.

A lot of these people DO have somewhere they could go, they just don't want to go there as long as they can panhandle, pick up welfare checks, and openly practice their drug culture ways while parasitizing the public in some manner.

JFK's last piece of legislation was passed on 10/31/63, The Community Mental Health Act, that began shutting down state run mental hospitals and brought the care and feeding of mentally ill people under the responsibility of the federal government and that naturally only the federal government had the know-how to accomplish what the states couldn't. Although not one of the Great Society programs, it fit right into the philosophy of the time that all you had to do to solve every problem of human existence was to fund and staff a federal agency. The word "Community" in the name is ironic because the local community had little control over it. There were supposed to be group homes, what came to be called halfway houses, to help transition mentally ill people back into normal society, but they never materialized in the huge numbers required. This was why from the late 60's on and into the 70's the cities filled up with what came to be called the "homeless". There's no doubt bedlams and snake pits existed on the state level, but what I wonder, where is an intractably mentally ill person going to be better off, outside or on the inside. Those problems could have been corrected.

I was there last summer, and spent most of my time in Waikiki. The bums steal often. They also try to extort you.

I often was on the beach at sunrise, before most of the bums showed up. I'd hang out on the benches / tables on the sidewalk. I have many stories, but here's a few:

1) One bum came up and was friendly, but after a few minutes he subtly started asserting that he "owned" that specific location (yes, the public bench / sidewalk), "because he often swept the ground" there. He then went into an elaborate spiel about how people need to help each other in this world, it's your "human duty", "some people are so greedy they cant even give someone $10 to get a bite to eat", gave me a veiled threat of "bad "karma" to greedy people" yada yada. I controlled the convo and steered it away from the handout request that was near, but all of a sudden he got much less friendly. heh. I left his spot a few minutes later, as I didn't want trouble.

2) Another morning I sat next to a bum (~21 yr old female) who was chatting up an old ~80yr old man for maybe 20 minutes. It was innocent enough sounding. Eventually, she steered the convo towards breakfast and got the man to admit he was hungry. She tried to use the rep she built w/ him to get him to give he $20 so that she could run "right across the street" to get him breakfast at a discount because she knew the restaurant owner. He hesitated, and she started pressing very hard, "you can trust me", "Im here at the beach every single day" "ask anyone - im good for it, I wont take your money" and other increasingly desperate appeals. I was proud when he said no and got up and left.

3) An acquaintance of mine got robbed. He left his stuff on the beech while he went in the water. He watched it from the water, because the beech was pretty empty in his location (north shore) but said there was a 1-2min attention gap and poof his stuff was gone.

4) I was working from my laptop from a bench on Waikiki. Nobody was around me for ~25 ft. I put my laptop onto the bench, and walked 10ft to a trash can to throw away some trash. When I turned around a bum was sprinting for my laptop, so I sprinted towards it too. He then realized I was gonna get him so he turned around and ran off. I think he thought I was going to walk farther away than the trash can (maybe the restroom?) is why he thought he could get away with it, but he was wrong :p I saw him in Starbucks the next day and he acted like nothing happened. I wanted to beat his ass, but I knew I'd only get myself in trouble, and there was no way to prove he tried to rob me. I had to let it go. It was the tan white guy w/ brown hair, about 35 yr old, often wore dark sunglasses. He looked pretty normal on days when he showered + shaved, but I could tell he was a junky. He was all over Honolulu - I saw him many times in many different places because he rode the bus often.

5) A bum had a ~3-5 min seizure on the sidewalk. 5 other bums were there, and they didn't really care. Pedestrians had to call the paramedics. The bums said the guy had seizures before, and "not to worry". They carried him away on a stretcher in an ambulance without any urgency. He kinda looked dead, but maybe not.

6) I was often solicited to buy drugs.

7) I talked to a girl on the bus, who eventually admitted she was homeless. She said for $100/mo you can stay in the homeless shelter there, but she usually preferred to sleep in the park / beach / tent etc...to save money.

They have a police station right there on Waikiki, and I'm glad they do. But, it's still sad how bad it is there. If I was only there for a few days, I wouldn't have noticed all this. They have a real homeless problem. I imagine many tropical places do, especially touristy places where they can steal or get handouts from rich visitors.

Tourist areas will often hide their crime problems rather than do something about them. It's strange they don't think about people being robbed and never going back and warning their friends.

Maui has knots of druggies and homeless everywhere. Hot weather means not much environmental problem but rain, and even that is warm. They say never leave any object unattended or not secured around any of the park areas.

Meth is quite a scourge in the islands. The 'island bro' stuff and 'anti-haole' stuff can get you canceled. When the drugs becomes acculturated, there is lots of co-dependance and minimization, too.

I was on the island of Samui in Thailand about a dozen years ago. I talked to a lot of people there including some of the locals. When I asked how there was so little crime when the police seemed so toothless (seriously, saw a cop hitching a ride on the back of this other guy’s moped), the local told me they had a mafia that took care of law and order. The law was don’t abuse the tourists and don’t sell illegal things without getting yourself approved by the mafia. I asked what happens to people who steal or hurt tourists? He said they disappear. Permanently.

In a society which is not peopled by moral citizens, but by amoral sociopaths, perhaps only an amoral source of law and order will serve to keep the peace.

The homeless aren't Bear Grylls types. They aren't out in the wilderness living off the land through their own work and grit. They are in concentrated human developments where there are drugs/alcohol/nicotine and improvisational living is parasitic on whoever they can cadge, mug or intimidate.

Nobody even bothers to find out where these people are from or why except the usual 'down on their luck' bullshit junkie drama. They give the LibbyFucks a chance to feel superior and beneficent, so that's always worth a few bucks of handouts.

The tide is turning - today 2 people got shot right by work which is in a beautiful office but unfortunately in the worst part of town. Not only the poop but also the violence is increasing, mentally ill, thugs, hobos are culminating to a toxic stew. When you read the comments in leftists rags such as SF Gate online you can see the tide is turning, people are getting angry. SF may be a lost cause being to leftoid where the mental illness has already taken too many brains, but there surely will be some sort of uprising at some point by taxpayers who don't want to pay for corrupt leftist politicians anymore and get zero services but a dirty and dangerous environment in return. If they don't succeed, they will simply leave town together with many businesses and that trend has already started. Leftoid western metropoles are turning into shitholes unless you're rich enough to buy a well-gated fort near skyline on the peninsula or maybe somewhere in the Marina, Pac/Presidio Heights, Sunset/Outer Richmond (predom. Yeah, I routinely can't get to my car when I'm down there cause it's blocked off and I have to sneak around from another block when in a hurry. Also got briefly caught in between a car chase and other incidents. The other day a guy in a suit got knocked out cold by some whacko in a random attack, bleeding onto the sidewalk. It's a daily shit show, there's some great food down there but other than that there's literally no reason ever enter the extreme shithole area. Today 6th and part of 7th were blocked off from mission to howard. All the while you had to be careful due to an armed suspect at large you also have to avoid stepping into the massive amount of human feces on the sidewalk - tough choice on where to focus your eyes on.

That's true but it has gotten worse in SF it is solidly within the top 50 most dangerous US cities. Of course compared to Oakland it's safe and mostly black on black crime but it def has gotten worse the past years.
