While unwilling to use the Defense Production Act to create desperately needed PPE or massively ramp up testing for the country, the mere possibility of not having his KFC or Wendy's burgers has pushed Trump to keep the butchering in full tilt. He knows his base would likely bolt without he seeing to their their fast food, meat addictions. It is the only thing standing between a sedated satiated society and canibal anarchy. He had no choice.

"WASHINGTON – Faced with worries of a meat shortage caused by the coronavirus, President Donald Trump plans to order meat-processing plants to remain open and will try to protect them from legal liability, , officials said Tuesday.

Trump plans to declare meat plants as critical infrastructure, and cite the Defense Production Act to justify an order to keep them open, said two officials familiar with the discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity because the order is not yet completed.

Trump could sign the order as early as Tuesday, officials said, and it will likely cover other types of food processing facilities.

Earlier, Trump said he did not fear any kind of food shortage.

"There's plenty of supply," Trump told reporters after meeting with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. "It's distribution."

What happens when meat packing plants get shut down?

Hint: Think of livestock herd populations. Think animal reproduction times and cycles.

Critical Food Supply, even if Granola Munchers think otherwise.

I love that guy and his pillows. He is a great promoter like Trump. As to masks just an excuse to get free publicity.

No question its a real issue but I'm sure his choice of applications of the DPA has nothing to do with who supports Trump and who doesn't.

A good idea! We don't want Chinese convert their giant fishing fleet (which already have fish-processing onboard) and container ship fleet to meat processing/shipping and park them 12 miles off-shore to take up all the live-stock produced in the US at fire-sale prices. The CCP has already bought off the Democrats; if they buy off the Republicans, that would be end of the world as we know it. We should never have sold Smithfield to the Chinese government-related buyer at all.

Now do NPR and the Kennedy Center. Were they also vital with no alternatives?

Never too late to nationalize and then sell to an American company. Matter of national security.

Any fatality rate data for these workers? It's a lot if illegals. Do they have health insurance, are they contractors w/o health insurance?

"At Koch Foods in Mississippi, Ramirez, an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant who asked to go by his last name, said a woman who worked near him showed up for her shift last week with a heavy cough. But after she told her supervisor, he said, she was told she couldn’t come back. The message was clear, he said. So, when he started feeling sick a few days later, he simply kept quiet and continued working.

“People are worried,” Ramirez said, that if they say they are sick, “they’ll fire us.”

Going to the doctor is not an option, he said, because he doesn’t have health insurance and fears it could expose his immigration status."

Hey...maybe he can use the defense of production act to force the meat suppliers to make their own N95 masks!

You just started your post and you’re already wrong! Not a good beginning.

This would also free up federal resources to make this happen. Perhaps a stipend could be added to the daily wage offered by these plants, to make working there more attractive. And with federal oversight comes better labor conditions for the workers. Maybe Guatemalan illegals working for Koch Brother(one died) big business can be shamelessly exploited, but not when Uncle Sam is watching!
Overall this couldn’t have happened to a nicer industry.
But I know the TDS-infected have a knee jerk ORANGEMANBAD reaction to any goddam thing the President does.

It’s kind of embarrassing to watch you idiots being such idiots.

So what is incorrect in that statement? Has Trump used "....the Defense Production Act to create desperately needed PPE or massively ramp up testing for the country" ? Pray tell? Or is it TDS to merely ask the question of his Majesty?

In that case, the threat was enough to force or perhaps “stimulate” compliance. It’s always easier to let someone carry out your orders than to force them to do so.

In this case, it’s an industry with many many problems, not the least of which is terrible working conditions, exploitation of illegal immigrants, and the lowest pay possible. Some federal oversight can only do good here.

First his, what is often called "jaw boning", hasn't worked well. We have neither enough tests or PPE, and as an aside we need PPE to keep these plants open, as they say shit flows down hill. And why take a chance? A real leader, as opposed to the cartoon character in the White House, takes charge and gets things done, and Trump has the authority. But as you say, "its always easier to let someone else..." do your job and then you can blame them when it doesn't get done or goes south and take credit if things work out. That is the Trump modus operandi.
