Seen stuff like that before. What you are seeing is a standing wave from a speaker. Where the particles collect is where the least vibration is. Any monotone will do that, and probably some more complex wave forms.

But if I had the monetary resources and the desire (and I don't have the desire) to wipe out a huge segment of the population, I'd just engineer a starvation. That's pretty easy to do.
