It'll be interesting to see German military spending next year. It's only E50B, barely enough to keep the bases functional, the lights and head on, the pensions paid, and equipment not rusting from being dumped in a misty forest clearing.

Imagine the Bundeswehr in the 80s and 90s, and imagine how many people retired from it, and how much of that E50B is their pension and retirement benefits.

They used to have top notch equipment and personnel, but all that money and incentives went into "green" energy. Basically, it's surrounded by a bunch of conventional explosives that compresses it to increase its density, and that makes it hit criticality, and it undergoes spontaneous fission, and boom! The smaller the sphere, the more conventional explosives you need in order to make it dense enough to hit criticality. So, you hit a limit where you need a more conventional explosives to make the core go supercritical.

Suitcase nukes, are impossible. At least to my limited understanding of chemistry. You'd be better off with a truck filled with explosives.
