Stay if you can put up with it. Hell I'm in IL for fucks sake. But that's mainly a property tax issue here and mine are extremely low. Our income tax isn't all that bad. I'd hit the 13% income marginal tax in CA which is fucking insane. I'd have missed out on prop 13, though I'm not sure how inheritance works. My dad's cousins live out there and own. That would be the only scenario I'd even think of moving out there if I could take over their houses.

I just cannot live on the coasts. That's why Texas is so popular. If you're near Houston/Dallas/Austin/San Antonio you can fly the mainland in 2-3 hours anywhere and Mexico/Caribbean. CA to NY for example is a cunt of a flight. Weather is not bad in TX. Housing is cheap(ish). No income tax. Guns. Less regulation. I like FL, but hurricanes can eat horse cock. I ain't dealing with that shit every fall.

Chicago is responsible for Chicago. The rest of the state is not that bad outside of winter. San Fran or Chicago don't make the state. I think you'd agree.

Local municipalities or cities are the biggest thing that effect us. Everyone gets caught up in national politics. CA does have some F'd up stuff going on though as a state and you guys mention it a lot. As I've said, I like it as a place to visit, but cannot imagine living there.

I work, eat, shower, shit and sleep in IL. When I get time off I'm out probably 2-3 months of the year. So not praising Chicago by any stretch, I won't go there besides the airports. I'm out on San Francisco 100% and LA. I want to get the kids to Redwoods and Joshua Tree. As my boys get older I'd like to do a Palm Springs area golf trip. I'd like to do Torrey Pines or Pebble Beach, but that's a bit much $$$ for what would be Sophomore to Senior in high school 5 years away. Fuck they're getting old.

Yosemite is a goal, but seems like a shit show of fires and a massive amount of people for a NP. I think Glacier NP is next of the list if I get my way with a launch from Bozeman, MT or Spokane, WA. Wife wants to do Acadia/East Coast #puke.

It’s only been four-and-a-half years since I left California and returned to my native Arizona. I had spent 25 years of my adult life in Los Angeles, along with four years in San Diego when I was a kid. There were a lot of things about California that I loved.

I don’t know if any of them exist anymore.

At CPAC earlier this year, I bumped into several of my L.A. friends from the old secret Hollywood conservative underground days. All had left California after I did. It was quite the ex-pat gathering.

The news out of California — and there’s been a lot of it already this week — is always creepy lately.

We’ve been reading about businesses fleeing San Francisco because of the crime and the out-of-control homeless problem. My friend and HotAir colleague John Sexton wrote a story yesterday about a woman in West L.A. getting hit in the head with a fire extinguisher in a random attack.

I lived in West L.A. for the last 12 years that I was in California. They weren’t exactly mean streets there. It’s heartbreaking to think that people aren’t safe anywhere in the city now.

Yes, California has been run by Democrats at the state level for a long time. There were still plenty of smaller cities and counties that weren’t, however. It’s a lost cause now, but the story of how quickly the state has gone off of the leftist cliff under Newsom should also be a cautionary tale. That's what I remind my wife all the time. It may not be exactly Monaco yet, but tell her where we live we are competing with the wealthy to live around here, and we have to accept the liabilities. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley(suburb of Los Angeles) and then moved around a bit in the Los Angeles Area, currently live in one of the nicest middle/upper middle class neighborhoods in LA County.

Los Angeles had a massive crime problem in the 80’s that blew up bigger than anyone in the US outside of NYC and Chicago has ever seen. Finally the imbeciles that live in City of Los Angels decided they needed to do something because there was a gang murder in a nice neighborhood(Silver Lake).

From that point, things slowly improved. Republican mayor Richard Riordan instituted empowerment tax zones to get business to fill in vacant buildings in downtown LA. This brought low end Spanish speaking business in and started downtown LA’s transformation. Eventually other measures were taken and by 2010, the homelessness was mitigated and City of Los Angeles became the safest big city in the nation. I even resided in downtown LA for a few years.

Eric Garcetti let things go to crap. Really bad. Crime has returned to pre 2000 level and homelessness is out of control. It’s by design. He did an interview after college(his dad was the DA at the time) expressing his belief that the federal government should provide housing to everyone. He intentionally fucked everything up in LA(same thing as Gruesome did to SF) in an effort to force the housing issue.

Now you have a California populace that votes against their own self interest. There is no coming back. Crime has leaked heavily into the suburbs as has homelessness. Moving out of state gets me to a safer environment, no state income tax, cheaper housing, cleaner environment, and it’s ridiculous at this point to stay in California. Wife has never been outside of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii. We’re going on a road trip this summer for several weeks through much of the American West. Our current plan is to retire in Las Vegas in a few years but I want to see if she is more open minded after seeing more of the country, particularly several red states.

Bottom line is California is expensive, dangerous, and beyond redemption. Sad, but too many ignorant and disconnected people live here.

I made my money and lived and had fun in Santa Cruz for 40 years; as soon as I quit working I was planning my departure.
The straw that broke the camel's back was Gavin Newsom saying white males were a problem.
The tax I paid to California was about 1/2 of my Federal tax; so I went to a nice part of Florida (there are a few) and don't file state taxes.
I'm not paying the rich pensions of California government goldbricks, nor healthcare for the illegals and their spawn.
I'm actually living in Baja but the Florida address is good for things like health insurance, etc.
I'm returning to Florida for the excellent health care, so I will become a "medical tourist" to Florida. I'll fly back this spring and probably have hip surgery in HSS which is a top orthopedic hospital.
Here in Baja Sur there are a TON of guys coming down from California, Canada, Oregon and elsewhere.
Guys I met from Vancouver can't deal with the high rents or gigantic mortgages, they work remotely.
My waitress a while ago said she was marrying a retired NYC cop; I didn't know anyone over there had heard of Baja.
Someday I may have to return to Florida when I am so old I can't handle it in Baja.
The downside of Baja Sur is the location with the best climate is pretty far from any hospital; so if you have a sudden problem, you're going to have to hang on for a couple of hours and hope you make it.

This was the primary reason we didn't move to CA about 6-7 years ago. Income taxes are retarded. Most of the wealth in CA actually isn't taxed that much. You get raped if you're W-2. Wife and I both are. We wouldn't make any more $$ out there either. Potentially less once you factor in the income tax. I get you don't pay the 13% on all income, just at the high end, but we were/are under 5% here in IL.

Housing is obvious, but we could stomach that I suppose by either renting or being more rural within 60-90 min of an airport.

Flying would be another issue. I suppose we could go to Hawaii easier #expensive, but being in the middle of the country currently we can get to so many cool places under 4 hours. Isn't it still like 5hrs from San Diego to Hawaii any way? I'm not sure I'd be a fan of Pacific Coast Mexico either. I like the humidity of the Caribbean. Have friends with free lodging in Costa Rica, so that wouldn't be an awful flight. Flying to Southeast Asia, South Pacific and Australia would be 4 hours less I suppose, but I'm going 1st class on any flight that long and that's a once every 5 year trip if for leisure.

I don't live there obviously, so cannot speak to conditions, but most you CA guys constantly bitch about it. Don't mean that negatively, you should bitch if you feel your state is run like shit. I can't live somewhere that I'm angry every day. I like mountains is the only thing I regret. And back to housing, I could slide my current house right into CA and it would look perfect. Problem is that $130k mortgage is probably $800k. And I really don't think I could rent again. I like the ability to bust open a wall, paint what I want, etc.

From Palm Beach airport American goes to Dallas then Dallas to San Jose del Cabo.
American has a few flights to La Paz from Dallas and Phoenix seasonally.
The climate in La Paz is superior to Florida but it's hot in July, August, September. The hospitals are in La Paz.
The Pacific side has an ideal climate almost all year, with a few weeks of humid weather.
It's unfortunately about a 50 minute drive from the Pacific side over to La Paz.
I had never thought about proximity to hospitals until I heard about various medical problems among my age group.

Haven't read it, prob not worth it, but my guess is they define "middle class" as close to poverty in reality for CA. I looked at their ratings for tax friendly states and saw that California is included and for exactly the reasons you stated. Of course they cited taxes on a hypothetical California home at $300,000. El oh El, where oh where are you finding a middle class home for $300k in California? The hood in Fresno or Bakersfield?

Eman! Hope you're doing well; sounds like it based on some recent postings. I just reactivated my presence here.

People make CA sound like some kind of tax 9th Circle of Hell, which it certainly isn't as that Kiplinger article points out. Prop 13 keeps my overall taxes quite low, and predictable. With a prudent tax strategy, one can live in CA and have very low taxes. For those who pay W2 tax, the difference between CA and other states really isn't a big deal, since states with low/no income tax will get the money from you through other taxes.

I often hear people say they left California due to taxes or politics, but usually the truth is that they simply can't afford it.
