True, but that is how it works in English and doing it wrong makes one look uneducated. If we were to be "logical" your sentence would have to spell "know" and "quotes" more like "noe" and "kwoats."

I would not reform spelling because it gives a lot of historical information.

What I mean is that you should never quote anything which was not literally part of the quoted text.

Do as computer languages do with quotes.

Holy shit, you are correct. I've never noticed this before. Anything in quotations must end with punctuation. I have never noticed this in all my life.

I'm being serious. It's extremely odd I didn't know this notation before. This really is quite surprising to me.

You are correct, every quotation must end with punctuation. I seriously never knew that, and I've read 100's of books. It's interesting I never picked up on this and I was never corrected on my hundreds of mistakes.

I knew that exclamations and periods should end within the quotes (I knowingly break this rule), but I never knew all quotations always ended in a punctuation of some sort - given nothing else, a comma. I had to pick up a book to find out you were right and sure enough it's ,"
