Understanding shareholder of record date and ex-dividend date...

I have a question regarding dividends. I will use AGNC as an example:

"American Capital Agency Corp. announced that its Board of Directors has declared a cash dividend of $1.40 per share for the third quarter 2011. The dividend is payable on October 27, 2011 to common shareholders of record as of September 23, 2011, with an ex-dividend date of September 21, 2011."

As I understand it, you must have purchased the stock before Sept 21 in order to be the "shareholder of record" by Sept 23, in order to get the dividend.

So what happens if you own stock (you bought well before these dates, say Sept 1), and sell it on Sept 22. Who gets the dividend?

And since we're talking about mREITs her (and for clarity, lets use the term mREITs whenever they're discussed), their leverage, leverage, LEVERAGE, OVERLEVERAGE (?) may be up for discussion as the SEC seeks comments at:
