http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/polls/226943-poll-romney-opens-up-big-lead-nationally

Mitt Romney has opened up 7 percent lead over President Obama nationally, according to the latest survey from conservative polling outlet Rasmussen.

Romney took 50 percent of the vote against Obama’s 43. It’s the first time Romney has hit 50 percent in the poll and is his largest lead over the president to date.

The disappointing jobs data released last week could be weighing the president down. Rasmussen found that only 38 percent of those polled said they approved of the president’s handling of the economy, versus 48 that disapproved.

Still, the poll could be an outlier, as most polls show a considerably tighter race. According to Gallup’s daily tracking poll, Romney holds only a 1 percent lead over Obama, while the president holds a one-point lead over Romney in the Real Clear Politics average of polls.

The RCP average includes Romney’s seven-point Rasmussen lead, as well as a few other potential outliers, including an Associated Press poll that shows Obama up by eight and a Reuters poll that shows Obama up by seven — both of which were released this week.

The Rasmussen daily tracking poll of 500 likely voters has a 3 percent margin of error.

Him draw bad card...

Most of politics is propaganda.
so what's your point? the reds do it more than the blues??
they are both guilty as charged, at equal levels.

Delurking says

>So in what universe does the "creator of the world" equate to a "job creator"?

"Creator" is a loaded term. It's propaganda.

Wrong. Noncommercial Government research accelerated the development of the internet. Government money created it and it would not have existed when Omidyar was doing his work.

No, that you are entirely full of shit about Obama slagging on small business with this. Even this from you:

"Taken in context with the whole paragraph, it is understood that a business is a cooperative effort between the owner and everyone else involved."

is restating the INCORRECT, LYING framing that Obama was saying business owners didn't build their businesses.

The "that" in Obama's "you didn't build that" was referring to local and national private public goods that have facilitated this nation having created so much over the past 200 years.

Here's the context again:

"Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business–you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."

vs your:

"But the way he phrased it is a direct insult to everyone who's ever taken the risks involved in starting up a successful business."

The only people taking insult at that is people wanting to take insult, and people who are getting their information from the propagandistic right who have dishonestly twisted Obama's very obvious speech here.

"Just look at the media storm he created by not parsing his words"

"I would say the sentence in question was mildly annoying"

"But the way he phrased it is a direct insult to everyone who's ever taken the risks involved in starting up a successful business."

You are either misinformed by your crap propagandistic sources or willfully repeating their lies here. Which is it?

If you think I did, show it.

"I am saying he doesn't understand what it takes to start a business and have employees, etc, or he wouldn't make statements that glibly toss off the hard work and personal sacrifice that business owners go through"

Obama made no such statement. In his quote that you objected to, he was clearly talking about the general environment, not any invesment in the business itself:

Here's Obama again:

Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business–you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

That was not about employees or the development of a proprietor's business itself. He was explicitly talking about the 1) educational system, 2) infrastructure, and 3) the internet.

Yet you went off on this statement, after you believed the lies from the usual "lying liars" in rightwing media.

It's really quite pathetic that you're still denying this.

88   Honest Abe   2012 Jul 23, 7:29am

DeeLurking - he DIDN'T say "if you got a bridge or a road, you didn't build that". He DID say "if you got a business, you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen".

Obama is clearly anti-success, anti-business, and anti-free enterprise.

89   Tenpoundbass   2012 Jul 23, 7:30am

Funny how miss used words are only important to Liberals, when they are trolling Republicans. Otherwise, they would defend Obama's speech if all he said was...

"Der der der da der dunt der der."

Of course they would also break it down for you and tell you what Obama meant.

90   Tenpoundbass   2012 Jul 23, 7:31am

Presidents have to chose their words carefully, everyone else has the liberty to not be so selective. Do you know who calls "Roads" "That"?

If he meant what you say he meant, it would have come out like this:
'If you've got a business- you didn't build those roads and bridges'

It all boils down to what he meant by "that".

Let's let SlickWilly be the decider on this....he's good at redefining prepositions and demonstratives....

Delurking says

Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business–you didn’t build that.

96   xrpb11a   2012 Jul 23, 3:10pm

If he was referring to "roads and bridges", he would have said it. Plain and simple.
Instead in the same sentence, he uses the object "business", and immediately refers to it with the demonstrative "that".

While one could make a feeble argument that taken in context with the whole paragraph, he was actually referring to "roads and bridges", Occam's Razor applies the stamp of approval to my interpretation, that he was referring to "business".

Case Closed.

I'm from Mass. Romney was our governor for four years and prior to that ran in the closest election against Ted kennedy in '94. Infact in my town there's a romney bumper sticker someone put up on a stop sign that is STILL there (torn and faded a bit).

I'm not exactly a fan of Romney. I don't like his stance on patents. But I think he'll probably win at this point. It won't be a landslide that's for sure but someone can win with just 51%..or 43% in the case of Clinton

Why?

Obama's ads aren't working. If this was March or maybe May I could see it differently but it is nearly August.Think about it this way. Romney has a ad about the economy. Obama slams Romney for not releasing tax forms...huh?

Obama has ads about Bane capital showing north eastern warehouses empty and empty factories. I'm sorry but how is this new again? There are PLENTY of old empty mills and factories all across the north east! Some are being made into condos. The closing of plants has been around here for 80 or so years! Every time I see an Obama ad I think i'm seeing a scene from Rodger & Me by Michael Moore! If this was new I could see it but frankly it isn't.

Another ad illustrates that Romney has a swiss bank account. Ok..but what it doesn't say is it only takes $5,200 to open one up! I've seen tuition bills for a semester larger than that! A simple google search revealed that which leads me to think that Obama isn't really targeting anyone specific as a voting block.

Obama says he needs more time to get thing done. OK fair enough but he also needs gridlock to end. Tea Party republicans aren't going to work with Obama for the most part. So how is he going to convince people to vote for him again and get congress "back" ? If Obama dabbles into local issues he'll get burnt against just like he was when he called police "stupid" and called the firing of teachers a "good thing".

There is also too much Obama does not answer. What specifically is the mission in Afghanistan with OBL dead? When Bush started that in '01 all he said was Obl dead or alive. simple enough. How can we go from a president who said "Mission Accomplished" when it wasn't over to one that doesn't know when to call when it is over?

What exactly has Obama done for his base? Since Obamacare was held up it starts fully in 2014. And if it is congress that wants to repeal it why reelect obama then? Isn't that mission accomplished? If congress overturns it then it doesn't matter who is in the white house.

Four years ago people thought obama would close camp x ray, legalize drugs, end the war on terrorism, pass single payer, pass employee free choice act etc As the time went on the economy became the greater factor but again there isn't that much specific.

111   gbenson   2012 Jul 26, 2:35pm

mdovell, keep in mind that Romney was a Democratic governor back then :)

As for the Swiss Bank account, talk to your accountant about Swiss Bank Accounts. He didn't open the account with the minimum balance to get the free Ipod. Swiss Bank accounts have one purpose and one purpose only, avoidance of tax liability.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Mitt Romney attracting 49% of the vote, while President Obama earns support from 44%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

That's a 5 point lead for Romney!

Here we go again. Nevermind that history has repeatedly shown that tax receipts from the top 10% have RISEN then their taxes on investment income have been dropped but FALL when the opposite happens.

Pure fantasy. This only happens in a very short window of about 3-6 months before and after a tax rate change when everyone hoards up their capital gains before a tax decrease or cashes out of capital gains before a tax increase. Longer term aka "history" it's not true at all. fail on this point.

Perhaps the Clinton boom has something to do with the Reagan tax cuts?

No. AFAICT the Clinton boom was thanks to the feel good times of the Soviet empire collapsing, cheap oil, PC take-up in business (and GUIs making them more productive than MS-DOS), the increasing globalization trend, rise of big-box retail stores, and the demographics of the baby boom (the median boomer was 35 in 1990), and the system having worked off the excess debt loads of the 1980s.

I'd link to graphs but FRED is down now.

PC take-up in business (and GUIs making them more productive than MS-DOS)

This and the advent of networking and email was more significant than many realize, in terms of productivity. Not to mention expectations about internet commerce and all the investment that was scaling up for that.

We didn't expect to have flying cars in the 21st century, but there definitely was irrational exuberance out there.

Just another indication of the rightward movement of the republican base. This doesn't translate into a move rightward by the country as a whole, just an affirmation of a trend in the republican primaries. Latest polls show a tilt toward Obama in Ohio and Florida while Penn. is pretty much no longer in contention (if it ever was). In a quirk of fate some of the swing states have seen significant improvements in their economies verses the nation as a whole. Romney, ideas aside, is just a terrible politician and an un-likable plutocrat. It really is a amazing he got the nomination, that is until you look at his competition in the primaries.
