Sea World basically tortured orcas to the point of insanity, blamed victims for their deaths, and covered up their atrocities.

Don't go to Sea World. It's modern day slavery of clearly sentient beings. And watch the film Blackfish.

The single most impressive thing in the film is when a pod of orcas, being hunted by humans, splits up into two groups. The mothers and their children take a covert route up one waterway while the adult males lure the humans down another water way. This shows group planning and communication. And that means a high degree of sentience and self-sacrifice.

Can orca's be fitted with Gatling guns?

Gatlings are a 19th century technology not designed for underwater use. Today's orcas want frickin' lasers attached to their heads.

Dan, thank you for posting this.
These Orcas were literally struggling to survive from the onslaught of the most cruel animal on the planet - man. I have no intention of watching Blackfish, as I don't think I could stomach cruelty to animals. I just hope movies like this and the internet influences our future generations to tone down the cruel and barbaric genes we all carry, in favor of the compassionate genes we all carry.
Factory farms are even more cruel. I can't get everyone to stop eating meat, but I do urge everyone to play their part in ending animal cruelty.
Happy New Year.

I watched Blackfish last just last week. I was shocked just at how the trainers were lied to about the limp fin phenomena, how most of the males in captivity have limp dorsal fins and when asked the trainers claim this is normal, that up to 25% of wild males exhibit this trait while in reality almost none do. Hell if my life sucked enough to be limp my whole life I'd probably do the same to my captors.

That said I used to live within walking distance of Seaworld. Never went as I don't enjoy watching such animal shows. Now so even less.

Does it have a happy ending? I'll watch it then.

When that orca killed that poor lady trainer I could only think with remorse that:

"Killer whales are just animals and can't distinguish the difference between the crowds yelling "killer whale, killer whale", from "kill her whale, kill her whale."

I was shocked just at how the trainers were lied to

The trainers seemed as much victims as the fish to the malevolent, conscienceless, corporate leadership. I wished the film could have spent a minute cornering one of the "people" actually responsible for this brutal organization. Even the "catcher" guy seemed so heartbroken by his participation, I wonder if the CEO is.

Yep, you either spout the propaganda with a smile or you are fired without hesitation. Good luck transferring your years of experience training giant marine mammals to the outside work force.

I just watched this the other day as well. Very disturbing, especially the torture these extremely intelligent, social animals must endure by living in a concrete swimming pool their whole lives.

I don't know-I am not a fan of animal rights. Animal welfare-yes-but not rights. I eat them and they are tasty.

Now I don't know enough about whales to know which side is right, but they seem to live long enough in captivity and a pack of killer whales kill and tear apart much bigger whales in the wild. So it is no surprise they attack their handlers on occasion -no different than lion or tiger trainers. Here is a video of killer whales killing multiple critters-including other whales and sharks.

The same thing with the campaign to ban carriage horses in new York. What are horses supposed to do-be turned out in a giant pasture and taken care of on the tax payer's dime??

Perhaps the welfare culture and the entitled generation now seeps into expectations that animals can be on welfare too.

You may ban the killer whales performance and there are calls for banning the circus animals and carriage animals and mink farms and fur and pretty much anything that catches the PETA types fancy-but where is it going to stop??

Unfortunately, no. However, the film perfectly conveys how greed trumps morality and how even good people are willing to buy a comforting lie. The testimonies of the ex-trainers were incredible. Good people duped into taking part in a bad thing by men who only care about the bottom line.

No, he never showed any remorse. Thad Lacinak even brags about his career at Sea World on his LinkedIn page. He is now running another company, Precision Behavior.

When there's money to be had, some people become blind to immorality.

No, it's not the same thing. Horses are domesticated animals. Orca's are captured wild animals.

Perhaps not only do conservatives not have any empathy for anyone or anything except themselves, maybe they are just fucking stupid.

Our system rewards this kind of behavior, that's the problem. I'm all for a capitalist system that creates wealth, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

They are animals. We can hunt them and eat them-just like they hunt and eat other critters. These critters have a life, daily simulation and things to do-unlike the ones stuck in zoos.finehoe says

Tell that to these guys!

Hey, they have 3 squares, exercise, and if they play their cards right nightly stimulation courtesy of their cell mates.

18   lostand confused   2014 Jan 1, 10:59am

So you are saying animals and humans are to be treated the same? The killer whales have it way better than the millions of chicken that grow up for food-you do eat chicken?? Some dolphin and gray whale somewhere must be thanking its stars that the beast is not out there killing and eating its babies alive

19   Shaman   2014 Jan 1, 11:14am

It's got to suck for trainers who sign up with stars in their eyes, in love with the idea, then learn the reality: that the whales are as near to personhood as is possible for a non human. The situation flips, they're now jailers, not trainers.

Last time I went to sea world I went to the orca stadium during their training. The whales know what to do perfectly. The trainers are just playing with them. It's like entertainment. You can see how much they like the whales and want them to be happy, but know that's not going to happen.
Orca attacks on humans are nearly non existent. This, with their far superior hunting ability: honestly if a pod of orcas wanted you and you were in any boat smaller than a freighter, they'd probably get you. So there's a reason they don't attack humans, and it's clearly not because they can't. I'd say this was proof of sentience.

21   Tenpoundbass   2014 Jan 1, 10:39pm

This argument would be better if you tree hugging spoon benders, would just educate the people, that Orca is swimming in a Whale sized commode, and that water you see him splashing on the audience when he jumps like a well trained circus animal on queue. Is actually Toilet piss, and whale poo water.

That being said, those Seaquariums save a lot Manatees, Sea turtles, marine birds, and other wild life around Florida. It's more than just a jumping Orca Whale.

22   Y   2014 Jan 1, 11:04pm

just a period at the end would suffice.

I don't know where to draw the line. I am not willing to shove my values down someone's throat like the Taliban. It's up to each generation to determine for themselves where they want to draw the line. I believe the trend is towards animal rights.

That is not logic, that was meant to be sarcasm. Since the animal rights brigade wants to equate animals with humans, I am doing the same. Or you want only your cause of the moment animal to be equated with humans??

Beleive it or not -I actually love animals and a lot of times I prefer their company to humans-but they ain't human. Now in terms of welfare, I think we should do our best, but projecting our emotions and values on to them and talking about slavery and such- that is just out of this world.

Now that I am looking to buy land, I am defnitely going to raise animals and eat them too. Maybe I might buy a few mink and raise them for fur -I do live ina very cold climate.. It is part of the cycle of nature. I think it is very sad that a large segment of population lives away from the life and death cycle of animals, get carried away by these campaigns-but have no problem buying leather shoes or eating at KFC.
