Neighborhood meeting, confront the issue, other wise you will continue to be pissed(at yourself).
Good point. Why don't we have an official language anyway? We all know English is god's tongue. And why don't we have a state religion? If it's good enough for England, it's good enough for me!
After all, we are a melting pot, right? That means new people assimilate and become white Anglophile Christians! I mean, we all know the brown skinned aren't white, but we sure love them when they are sycophantic!!
English is already the international language of business. Why shouldn't it be the required language of this country? Other countries have several required languages. We don't even have one. It all contributes to further estrangement of the people from each other. We are all people, with our own problems and talents and social/cultural hangups, but if we can't talk to each other, then to each other we become "the other."
Which, cynically, I think is the point.
English became the international official language, because at one time. People around the world needed to be able to read the packaging and instructions of the best quality goods manufactured on the planet.
What yous fail to mention is that the rest of the world wants to be like America they want to emulate Americans.
Multiculturalism may be to our own destruction.
Multicuturalism I would welcome. It's the Idiot Uniculture that scares the hell out of me.
I just watch in horror as the rest of the world tries to "Westernize"(Americanize), often with the same embarrassing, humiliating, and ugly results.
From Walmart shoppers to People who obsess over their online social profile while their kids starve to death. Yes, God Bless America, the whole world should just be a unified Idiot.
We spread Democracy and a whole slew of Social ills.
Why do you think China and Russia are going back to their roots and old traditions.
Western Culture demands that you keep your eyes on a digital screen, that feeds you unfiltered fetid filth and moral rotting ideas and images.
It's unfortunate that those countries couldn't just censor with out drawing the ire and rage from the rest of the world for daring to not sit through Gay propaganda internet videos, and and people denouncing religion and traditional values. So now the only choice those countries have, is to re-isolate them selves. So it's none of the busy body Liberal's damn business what they allow or don't allow to pass over their networks.
And for a further fuck YOU, China has decided to make their own flavor of Operating systems, opting to swear off any American OS's on their domestic devices.
I really have to ask my self, can you really blame them?
This all being said, I still think it's important for immigrants to learn English. While at the same time, I also think it's important, that we as a society foster and encourage immigrants to remain steeped in their respective cultures. With out it, America becomes a stagnant cesspool of mediocre ideas and thoughts. We stop innovating and centuries of knowledge is lost as cultures and pasts are forgotten as American Pop culture replaces all other thought.
English is great because it can be encoded using 7-bit ASCII. Even in UTF-8, each character is always single-byte.
Interesting-are they poor with no means to pay the bill and so the revenue generators-err cops-do not bother with them. Why can't the cops put a ticket and go on if they are not up to code. I don't think I can go 120mph in a55mph zone and say I don't know English as a defense?? I will get my ticket.
And when the suggestion of eviction came up, immediately all the regulations along with the problem of having to communicate with him.
You should raise the issue with the landlord, the person with the most skin in this game.
English Is A Must
I don't really understand anyone who wants to make this an issue.
English is the language that all public schools operate in. So if a first generation family is here, their kids are going to learn to speak english well, without even an accent. If their parents have a hard time changing quickly, and live in a multilingual community, who cares ? I don't have a problem with it.
They aren't trying to insist that their children not learn english,
This is not an issue. If someone who speaks another language wants to live here, it's so much in their own best interest to learn English, that we don't need to worry about it. This is a problem that takes care of itself. But I do agree that all public schools should have English as their primary language (which they do).
I respect second or third (or later) generation latino families who insist on speaking spanish at home, at least in the first several years of the child's life, so that their children can grow up being totally bilingual ( they function in English at school every day - so learning English is a given - and learning language as a young child is the optimal time to do it). I envy people that are bilingual. I don't feel that they are taking anything away from me if more people in certain regions of the country have communities with a lot of bilingual people. And if these communities are comfortable for people that don't know English well (YET), that's okay. It's still very much in their interest to learn English, and they know that.
They aren't trying to insist that their children not learn english
In fact they do want their kids to learn English well, because they understand the economic reality.

Splain please?

They want a better economic future for their kids. They understand that would mean learning English.
I live in a neighborhood with a high percentage of immigrants. Immigrants from all over the globe...from South and Central Africa, to Pakistan, to Latin America.
While I love my neighborhood for this, at the same time, it brings home to me the importance and necessity of English if we are to remain a republic.
Case in point, my neighbor, who has been stacking trashbags of cans outside his patio in the sun. The smell of the remaining food stuffs have been coming into my place on and off for weeks now. Complaints to management, the police and fire department, made it go away..only to return.
Part of the guy's defense is he or his wife do not understand English. And when the suggestion of eviction came up, immediately all the regulations along with the problem of having to communicate with him.
It strikes me. For a Democrat, they clearly do not care about English requirements. For a Republican who asks for it, they are labeled as "racist". But we live in a Constitutional Republic where the Rule of Law is written down...in English!
It boggles the mind that anyone would be allowed in, moreover be given a long term visa, moreover be offered citizenship, without this most basic skill to live within the laws of our land!!
