Oct. 29, 2014, 2:19 p.m.

Democrats have lost ground with millennials compared to past election cycles — a development that suggests the country's youngest voters are open to both parties, according to a new Harvard Institute of Politics poll.

The nationwide poll of more than 2,000 adults ages 18 to 29, conducted Sept. 26 to Oct. 9, found significant political divisions across racial lines, no significant gender gap in the age group, and a slight Republican advantage among definite voters going into the 2014 midterm election.

“A lesson here, for us, is that young people, millennials, are no longer the political outliers that they once were,” said John Della Volpe, the Harvard Institute of Politics polling director, on a conference call with reporters. “In contrast to where we were four years ago, the youth vote is very much up for grabs politically.”

The 2014 poll shows that 51 percent of millennials considered most likely to vote would rather see a Republican Congress — 4 points higher than those who prefer Democrats. That's a 16-point jump from 2010, when that group preferred Democrats by 12 percent.

Millennials “could be a critical swing vote in races across the country,” said Maggie Williams, the Harvard IOP director. “The message is clear: Ignore millennial voters at your peril.”

Della Volpe said the shift is indicative of enthusiasm levels this cycle for young Republican voters vs. Democrat voters. Those who voted for Romney in 2012 are more likely to participate this November, he said.

Still there was good news in the poll for Democrats: Overall, the party is seen as more trustworthy on a variety of issues.

Turnout for millennials is expected to be about the same as in 2010.

“The message that we have is that young people care deeply about their country,” Della Volpe said, indicating that millennials are likely to volunteer in areas where they can achieve tangible results. “Unfortunately they're not as connected to politics.”

The poll identified significant differences between young black voters and young white voters. Support for President Barack Obama remained high with black voters, at 78 percent approval, while young white voters disapproved of the president by nearly two-to-one. That 47 percent gap is 11 points higher than it was in the fall of 2009. Young white voters preferred Republicans in control of Congress and black and hispanic voters preferred Democrats.

On terrorism and national security issues, 61 percent of millenials polled said they are “a great deal” or “somewhat” worried about a terrorist attack. They approve of expanded strikes against ISIS by about two-to-one, 39 percent to 20 percent with 38 percent unsure.

As for how to reach these young voters “up for grabs,” political parties will have to use different social media platforms for different demographics. Young white voters use Facebook, SnapChat and Pinterest. Young black voters use Instagram and Twitter more.

The Harvard Institute of Politics has been polling young voters since 2000, and has released 26 national surveys since.

They've been living at home with Mom and Dad having to have a healthy dose of reality crammed down their throats. I think at this point these kids want a real job that can pay them real wages, and more importantly buy them their independence. Where they would be free to have Liberal fantastical ideas, but be left up to their self reliance to make those a reality or a flop.

$20 bucks here and there every day is getting harder and harder to pull out of Mom and Dad, as their finances are squeezed. They aren't propping up these kids idealistic lifestyles, where they just want to ride their bike and chill. Which is code for go over to so and so's house with a 12 pack of beer and a grams of weed. now they are bored out of their skull and are waking up.

Those republicans aren't that bad, they want the same thing that they do. And that is that kids over 18 get a job or go to school with out bankrupting their lives, and moving out of their parents house and living a productive life.

Nothing wrong with that is there Dan?

It's all Obama's fault!!!

Good.

Maybe now we can move away from Obama's banker-blowing corporate toady governance philosophy to that of the GOP.

Well that is why people voted for Obama. We got the GOP onsteroids. Maybe the GOP is better than the GOP on steroids(aka Obama)?

Says a right-wing propaganda mill.

One of the few benefits of the Second Great Depression is that the entire, large generation of Millennials have been sealed in as anti-Republican due to the severe financial raping of this generation at the hands of those Republicans.

When young adults form their lifetime political allegiances, their experience in the job market have a damn strong influence.

Oh look who'd it is, coming to play the race card on the Republicans while spewing Liberal sanctioned Bigotry.

SBH do you have any black friends, have you ever helped a black neighbor without seeking repayment because that's what neighbors do? SBH are you married to a Hispanic woman and are you on great terms with the huge extended family that brings? SBH can you count all of your white friends that you have on just one hand? I'm hosting a party tonight with about 70 people, and will be the only White guy there. Well my wife's sisters husbands Brother in law might show up. But we're more acquaintances where as the Carbajal's and Aguierie's are people I can call and they call when we need each other's help.

Then how come it's always the race baiting Liberals that keep getting caught saying those things in the Conservative's proxy? They aren't saying those things, the Liberals are saying that they are. And they are repulsing everyone while doing so. That shit is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 2008.

It's tired, it's stale and it's repulsive.

SBH do me a favor and be at the polling stations Tuesday to do some last minute politicking. Just be your normal nice honest self.

Don't "early" mail in votes only count in a recount?

In Florida, no votes count unless you vote for the person the vote counter wants.

Ya gotta cut danny and SlutBitchHoe some slack. They are enraged because they realize they truly are being voted into obsolecence come tuesday by the youngest generation eligible to vote. When the core age group you've counted on over the decades comes up and tells you to fuckoff....well...you kinda know you and your ilk are going to hell in a handbasket..

Did I read the same article? 51-47 is hardly "fuckoff" and "obsolecence". Its within the margin of error of most polls

Millennials just woke up, put down the hookahs, and realized success comes from being a Supernova ASSHOLE, just like the BoomFucks!

20   Tenpoundbass   2014 Nov 1, 5:54am

How do people whip their smart phones out, swipe the unlock screen, find where the OS moved the camera icon to THIS TIME!, open it, realize it's in video mode, switch it to camera, change the camera mode from burst shot to a normal mode, and snap the picture with out missing the shot and the moment?

As long as I've had my smart phone, I have had to recreate the moment after it happened which is never as good as the impulsive moment I missed.

I wish Android would stop fucking with the Icons and moving them all over hell every 10 minutes. That is probably the most single annoying thing, that I would ditch Android over one day.

Maybe they know how to operate their phone better, have a different phone that get ot the picture part first, or the most plausible, which is that the Obama mask was so scary that the person taking the picture could take their time.

23   Tenpoundbass   2014 Nov 1, 6:28am

I have the S4 and have to go through the exercise I described every time, unless I just the camera app running.

My wife has the S5 and she got the SView cover, it has the camera icon and you can snap pics without having to unlock the phone and open the app.

Eh, they will vote this time around, realize that nothing changed and they still can't get real jobs or houses, and they will go back to sucking the hookah and never vote again. It's the cycle of life in a "democracy"
