Hmm, wonder which Game group it was. If Pao shut down the one run by SJWs who claim they are constantly aggressed upon, while calling their anti-censorship opponents "Neckbeard Virgin Losers who should die in a fire for being CIS Gender Scum", I'd be gobsmacked.

Womyn-born-Womyn everywhere must be mad the Transphobic group shut down. They have shown they'd rather close down their multi-decade Music Festival than admit Trans people, and continue their quest to ban TG people from using women's restrooms, even if they have a functional vagina.

So, you are free to have "authentic conversations" on Reddit unless Ellen Pao decides your conversations are not "authentic"?

How can I get all those censored Redditors to come to patrick.net instead?

The only things censored on patrick.net are spam, porn, and threats of physical violence.

3   lostand confused   2015 Jun 11, 9:59pm

Looks like Kung Pao -err Ellen Pao is busy running that site into the ground. Any wonder she was fired.

I thought all the comments were,,, Spam & Porn. LOL

No one censored on other sites can compete with the expert trolls on Patnet.

Ellen Pao is resigning from Reddit after a stormy eight months as interim CEO, handing the reins to co-founder Steve Huffman. Pao told Re/code that she wasn't fired

A lot of social-media engineering happens on reddit. It's a juicy target for anyone aiming to promote a trademark. I am nearly certain that Conan O'Brien's media team does so, and Elon Musk gets incredible fellatio there - not certain if it's through the use of shill accounts, because the demographic at reddit (20something gamers, basement neckbeards and the few women who are their girlfriends) tend to be Musk fans.

The problem is extracting money. They get a few million in ad revenue, I think, and direct some traffic to other sites owned by the same firm (Conde Nast/Advance Publications). Pao may have been trying to whore the IAmA subreddit to various publicists of celebrities and companies.

Anyone who monetizes reddit will have to do something similar to what Pao did, but with more subtlety.

so why did reddit become so popular?

so why did reddit become so popular?

The community creation ability, throw away accounts, a place for everything, and an easy way to filter to what you want to see. Eventually it got critical mass with a core crowd (20 something gamers), and boom, that was it.

9   Patrick   2015 Jul 11, 2:03pm

you still need an email to register on reddit though, right?

so why did reddit become so popular?

It's the ne plus ultra site for amusing .gifs, memes and cat pictures. Since the fundamental substance of the Internet is outrage anecdotes and justice porn, and reddit was and is a goldmine of such statistically inconsequential but emotionally provoking horseshit, it maintains a firm grip on a segment of Internet users.

For a time, the /r/worldnews and /r/politics front pages were better than mainstream media sites at prioritizing events by importance and interest, but those days are gone.

It's fundamentally a gamer and 20something demographic there now. I think League of Legends is responsible for several percent of their traffic.

Nope. I meant Republican & Democratic voters.

I think it is that, plus the moderation, 'ownership' feeling some have of over certain domains.

Yes, but I think to a degree you are even more anonymous than Pnet, YouTube, etc. etc. I could be wrong here. I'm a reddit consumer not a contributor.

As of January 2015, they are no longer in 520 3rd Street according to the doorman, but have moved to 548 Market Street.

15   Patrick   2015 Aug 6, 11:23am

Ah, fooled again! 548 Market Street is just a private PO box setup for companies that want to hide their real address yet have a fashionable Market Street addr.

So where is Reddit really located?

Reddit deleted a paragraph known as a "warrant canary."

The paragraph had said that Reddit had not been subject to national security letters, which are used by the FBI to conduct electronic surveillance without the need for court approval, or "any other classified request for user information."

@Patrick, does PatNet have such a canary? Did it have one in the past? There were some comments about the idea.

18   Patrick   2016 Apr 1, 2:05pm

Nope. I have had no demands for any user data. And that's a good thing.

19   zzyzzx   2016 Apr 1, 2:14pm

In so far as being banned of reddit, I was banned from offmychest simply by posting in iamgoingtohellforthis. I wish I were kidding.

20   Patrick   2016 Apr 2, 1:02pm

Any cursory inquiries - like would you consider it in the future - say on the grounds of national security ?

no, i don't believe "national security" could possibly be relevant to a public anonymous forum, but if one user threatens violence to another, i will go to the police myself with their email address and IP address.

so you can say "you're an ignorant asshole and i hate you" and that's fine.

but you cannot say "i'm going to find you and personally beat the shit out of you" because that is a felony.

curious2 says

good idea actually. now there is a line in the about page which says "patrick.net has never received a national security letter".

Reddit is a cess pool of sub 90 IQ libtards.

I use reddit for a sub called "century homes" because I like to read about other peoples experience living in old houses. Even in this seemingly apolitical topic, there is a constant stream of trump bashing.

Not coincidentally, there is also a constant stream of reproachment from resident Karen's anytime someone paints with some neutral colors or, god forbid, strips some wood or removes some plaster without calling in the EPA SWAT team to remediate for lead or asbestos.

The beauty is that most of the people with the strongest opinions on what owners can and can't do to their century home is posted by people who rent.

I haven't bothered to look into their arcane rules, but it seems I can't post there because I haven't contributed enough content to their pre-approved list of subs.
27   Patrick   2025 May 31, 8:59am

A good opportunity to point out reasons to support Trump.
28   GreaterNYCDude   2025 May 31, 1:20pm

Reddit is one of my daily gotos. I can't explain why. I think it's the focused forums on a few niches that I can't find here, for example:

r/trippingthroughtime
r/theydidthemath

There a lot of noise but I tune it out. That said I come here for memes and (mostly) intelligent conversation.

Having seen this place from a housing forum focused mostly on the Bay Area to what it has evolved into has been.. something.

I wish Patrick every success. Having met him and his other half way back when, they are good people

I have my beefs with a few user mildly, but I pretty much respect everyone here. I LOVE the addition of the hide thread feature. I don't want to ignore users unless it's an obvious bot. Not a knock on any user, but I would see the sexy picture thread every day in my feed. I like woman, but I don't need to see that every day. And yes I can scroll past. But that then bumps other threads that go to page two if I didn't check in for a day.

I can tune out the noise, but I miss something because of BS threads. And this includes the boss. Covid thread are annoying at this point. It's 2025. Not saying they're wrong, there's just a lot. It's been half a decade at this point. Keep fighting if that's your goal, but nothing is going to come of it. Now I can ignore the thread.

Man reddit sucks. I live in a +21 Trump County but going by the reddit for it you'd think we are full of Karen Lesbians for a Sustainable Future

I was a funeral on Saturday, and when they asked if people wanted to stand up and say anything, a massive lesbian with a crewcut got up and went on and on about Palestine.

WTF?

It's virtue signaling for it's own sake. These types of people got on the VS train back in the late 'naughties, but don't have the sense to get off now that the train has derailed. It was always about creating a fake "community" - why do you think they kept changing the jargon about race and fag shit? It was a competition like high school - who has the coolest sneakers first? Infantile garbage.
33   GreaterNYCDude   2025 Jun 2, 8:07am

Why is it Americans who have little or no connection to the middle east care more about Palestine than Palestine OH?

This situation in Gaza is sad, tragic, and yes a humanitarian crisis... But nothing I can do within my sphere of influence will make the situation over there better.

Sorry for your loss. Funerals are rarely a good time.

Sums it up pretty well. I had it easy though. I hated the cliques of high school. All state athlete, band nerd, was drummer in an actual rock band, average grades but was friends with all the smart kids and they didn't look down on me. I could shoot the shit with anyone, no aggression towards me and nothing from me to anyone.

It goes south when you get pigeon holed into one clique and not multiple. Say goth for example. A lot of those people ended up supposedly gay. I swear it was just for attention because they never got it, I think ultimately from absentee parents. I think sports level the playing field as long as you're not the movie depicted jock ass hole.

I don't know about cities but kids are strangely kind to adults now where I live. I think college warps them if they go. I find high school students much more refreshing than the college aged students at least as an adult observing. College age they get cocky. I want to say, you do know ANY university would have accepted you if you paid. You're not special if you go to ASU, LSU or UofI. They take anyone with a heartbeat now. Started getting that way when I went to college. There's no more prestige, just fancy dorms and dinning halls for the dorms.

I'm noticing this phenomenon with my nieces and children of friends that are college age. The superciliousness and know it all arrogance - it's so bad it's an anti-survival trait. Listen to your elders - they're the ones who lived long enough to bore you to death.
