It shouldn't sting from the rational point of view (lol, how common is "rational"?). Right, but there are different kinds of selection, called r and K selection I think. There are societies as in sub-saharan Africa where the women are slutty and have to depend on their own grandmothers for help in raising the child. But they are weak societies exactly because of the lack of paternal certainty and therefore the lack of paternal investment in the children and the societies.
