"Islamist" was always a manufactured propaganda-word that had little use in English before 2001/09/11. The words

Islamic and Islamist

make no more sense than the following artificial words, all contrasted against the more common form:

Christian and christianist
Communian(!?) and communist
Capitalian(!?) and capitalist

A christianist is a christian that wants to impose christian rule upon the world
A communist is a communian (?) that wants to impose communism upon the world
A capitalist is a capitalian(?) that wants to impose capitalism upon the world

Why did a special propaganda word have to be invented only for islamic? I guess it was convenient, and it was lexicographically easy to do, since the existing word islamic did not already have the dreaded and loaded -ist suffix.

I bet most people never even blinked an eye in surprise when the new word "islamist" was introduced by the news media on a grand scale.
