Christmas is a time when silly working-class people buy things they really cannot afford in-order to give them to people they do not particularly like. The best way to handle Christmas is simply not do it, turn-off the phones, and of course the television, fix yourself a stiff drink and sit in-front of the fire and read a good book. It's a time when Madison Avenue manipulates square-eyed simpletons, charities and Church's of all denominations to make money.





As for Christmas being an "American" tradition there are a lot of other countries laying claim to that tradition and way before we became a country.

If they choose not to frequent Starbucks or the mall sure, that's their right, similarly the leftoids have the right to boycott orgs they don't like. What nobody has a right to is to force the other person to change their words, and there unfortunately the leftoids are front-runners. I think that's all this thread is about.

That's not how I read it. Patrick clearly wanted Obama to use the term Merry Christmas. Seems like Patrick is playing identity politics.

As a secular Jewish guy from New York, I loved Abraham & Strauss, Macy's, etc. with all their Christmas Decorations.

The other night I dreamed I was a child, waiting in Grandpa's old Oldsmobile outside a restaurant called "Key Largo" in Long Island, for him to place his OTB bets.

Remember him reading the Daily Racing Form and smoking his pipe, mixed with the smell of the gas stove and Grandma's cooking, and the old Christmas Tree with those big old fashioned bulbs that if one went, the whole string went.

He used to call hamburgers "Meatburgers" in his old fashioned Brooklyn accent.

They even had those original oil burners that took up a whole room, and you had to crawl under to smack around if something went wrong, a la "Christmas Story".

No way. Christmas is alive and very well, ironically driven largely by secular business desire to get people to buy gifts.

I do agree that it's unseemly to start promoting Christmas before Thanksgiving, and I try to boycott any business that does that.

I'm an atheist who is half Jewish (by family tree, not practice). I say 'merry Christmas' when out and about, and have never had anybody attack me or give me any evil look. I'll also say happy holidays on occasion. However, once this stupid culture war heats up every year, I start getting pissed off when I hear 'merry Christmas.' Instead of happy feelings, it conjures images of Bill O'Reilly's smug ass douche bag face and the holier than thou assholes who take up his drum beat.
