Shock, Horror and Shame
The world watched with shock, dismay and horror as a “surreal scene” at the US Capitol, like little else seen in its history, unfolded on Wednesday, the Washington Post reported.

“Were this a different country on a different continent, we would be talking of a failed state,” BBC correspondent Nick Bryan tweeted.

Broadcasters around the world aired livestreams of the events as they unfolded, with some interrupting regular programming to show minute-by-minute developments as protestors loyal to President Donald Trump stormed through police barricades and mobbed the Capitol to disrupt a vote to formalize Joe Biden’s presidential election victory.

Many foreign observers, already following the elections in Georgia, reacted with alarm and even grief, especially in allied countries that have looked to US democracy for inspiration.

“The United States Congress has been the symbol of freedom and democracy around the world for centuries,” said Armin Laschet, the governor of Germany’s most populous federal state. “The attacks on the Capitol by fanatical Trump supporters hurt every friend of the United States.”

Across much of Europe, top officials echoed these sentiments. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the scenes of chaos “disgraceful.” In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians were “deeply disturbed” and that he was “following the situation minute by minute.” The Organization of American States noted, “The exercise of force and vandalism against the institutions constitutes a serious attack against democratic functioning.”

The scene at the Capitol also marked an opportunity for countries criticized by the United States to turn the tables. Turkey, a NATO ally that has been widely criticized for jailing thousands of critics, academics, journalists and artists and has seen its relationship with the United States deteriorate, called on “all parties in the USA to show restraint and common sense.”

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said, “And for this country you will be eventually talking only about Russian/Chinese alleged meddling! Man shrugging #KeepCalmAndBlameRussia.”

Many around the world were already closely watching the US, in particular the run-off elections in Georgia. On Wednesday afternoon, those races were called for Democratic candidates – Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff – tipping the Senate to the Democrats and thereby granting the party control of both the White House and Congress. In spite of the lowered standing of the US on the world stage over the past four years, what happens in the US reverberates around the world, say foreign observers and officials.

“How I would like to be a voter of the #DekalbCounty in #Georgia! And vote #Ossoff,” former Italian prime minister Enrico Letta tweeted earlier in the day, referring to a Georgia county with a large number of Democratic voters.

“US and international politics over the next few years will depend on his victory,” he wrote. “Those votes will affect us, too.”

In the case of OP there was not one peep of outrage at the riots over the George Floyd murder and the burning of cities as well as the overrun of police stations in multiple cities by those rioters. To the point that OP and likeminded people won’t even call them riots.

It's called 'celebrity/big people' status over 'small people'

You see, maiming or killing a senator or congressman is a federal offense which can carry the death penalty. At the same time, their place of business, the Capitol Building is considered consecrated grounds in terms of the US Govt as a type of religious allegory.

So when regular cities get ransacked and torched, it's the small people who suffer (which include policemen, regular pedestrians, etc) and thus, get no attention.

Well, one of demonrats did urge his supporters to attack congressmen on these consecrated grounds in 2018 (https://patrick.net/post/1337468/2021-01-09-inciting-violence-against-congresscritters).

Don't remember OP objecting then either.

Fantasy vs reality. In fantasy, many ppl want to get 'in the face' of a congressman a/o senator whom they hate. But when it actually occurs, esp via armed mob, it's a different story.

This is why despite all the decent work Trump did for the past four years in terms of trade agreements, minimizing mideast wars, confronting outsourcing, he'll only be known as the man who set a mob loose upon the Capitol Building and its senators and congressmen.

Its always amusing how many americans think that the WORLD spends their time thinking about them. If anything, the few people in the world that even bothered were probably laughing.

I feel outplayed.
It seems naive to think that gigantic rally couldn’t be pretty easily used to destroy the credibility of the entire Stop the Steal Movement.
It seems like we handed them an easy 2 point conversion.
Which won the fucking game.
Which was the final game of the playoffs.

Because it's also affected some of the 74M, who weren't fooled.

Realize, a lot of moderates were disappointed at Wed's debacle (after having been in hiding for all of 2017 to 2020, for at least recognizing that despite Trump's crappy personality, that we were better off today than under a bozo like George W Bush).

This was a public relations disaster equivalent to the Hindenburg explosion which ended the era of Zeppelins (aside from Led Zeppelin).

If they are that short-sighted they deserve every ounce of tons of shit coming upon them. "OMG, a dozen of bozos entered the Capitol building following some provocateurs!!! It changes everything! It changers everything! It makes us want to let the fucking caravans through, surrender to China, pay MOAR taxes and the rest of the shit donkeys are eager to bring upon us! Totally!"

They're not short-sighted. And yes, they know that those ppl were bozos but that doesn't change the fact that the Prez told the protestors to walk across the Mall and then, confront the Congress who're stealing the election.

Most of us live in Blue states; what do we do when instead of talks about "no-Syria war", etc, we get a depiction of inciting an irresponsible mob? Moderates realize that there are limits to mob attacks and yes, attacking the Capitol was one of them? Now, no one wants to talk to anyone about anything.

And then it begs the question, why didn't Trump declare a State of Emergency on October 15, saying that the US election and financial systems were under threat of eminent cyberattack? If so, he could have stopped the steal before the steal and then, we would have had a presidence, based upon intel (real or even slightly hyperboled) from the DIA, NCIS, NSA, etc, about the possibly that the entire election system being under siege. That would have been a smart move.

Instead, we got a lot of hand waving starting on Nov 4 with the so-called dream team of Guilianni a/o Powell, ending with the Capitol vandalism.

And sure, now ... let's talk about outsourcing/globalism/war on terror and all the things which George W Bush did, to ruin the American nation-state for the 21st century. Sorry, it ain't happening.

The 21st century is done.

I just disliked my last post. I don't want it to be right.

Trump could still come through at the nineteenth hour and expose the whole corrupt facade that covers the real power in this world.

We're almost certain that Biden, Harris, et al. are puppets. Is Trump?
