Shock, Horror and Shame
The world watched with shock, dismay and horror as a “surreal scene” at the US Capitol, like little else seen in its history, unfolded on Wednesday, the Washington Post reported.

“Were this a different country on a different continent, we would be talking of a failed state,” BBC correspondent Nick Bryan tweeted.

Broadcasters around the world aired livestreams of the events as they unfolded, with some interrupting regular programming to show minute-by-minute developments as protestors loyal to President Donald Trump stormed through police barricades and mobbed the Capitol to disrupt a vote to formalize Joe Biden’s presidential election victory.

Many foreign observers, already following the elections in Georgia, reacted with alarm and even grief, especially in allied countries that have looked to US democracy for inspiration.

“The United States Congress has been the symbol of freedom and democracy around the world for centuries,” said Armin Laschet, the governor of Germany’s most populous federal state. “The attacks on the Capitol by fanatical Trump supporters hurt every friend of the United States.”

Across much of Europe, top officials echoed these sentiments. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the scenes of chaos “disgraceful.” In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians were “deeply disturbed” and that he was “following the situation minute by minute.” The Organization of American States noted, “The exercise of force and vandalism against the institutions constitutes a serious attack against democratic functioning.”

The scene at the Capitol also marked an opportunity for countries criticized by the United States to turn the tables. Turkey, a NATO ally that has been widely criticized for jailing thousands of critics, academics, journalists and artists and has seen its relationship with the United States deteriorate, called on “all parties in the USA to show restraint and common sense.”

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said, “And for this country you will be eventually talking only about Russian/Chinese alleged meddling! Man shrugging #KeepCalmAndBlameRussia.”

Many around the world were already closely watching the US, in particular the run-off elections in Georgia. On Wednesday afternoon, those races were called for Democratic candidates – Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff – tipping the Senate to the Democrats and thereby granting the party control of both the White House and Congress. In spite of the lowered standing of the US on the world stage over the past four years, what happens in the US reverberates around the world, say foreign observers and officials.

“How I would like to be a voter of the #DekalbCounty in #Georgia! And vote #Ossoff,” former Italian prime minister Enrico Letta tweeted earlier in the day, referring to a Georgia county with a large number of Democratic voters.

“US and international politics over the next few years will depend on his victory,” he wrote. “Those votes will affect us, too.”

After nine months of horrifying destructive left wing riots, we are supposed to believe that one little protest by the right is out of line?
Go sell that shit to a farmer. You might get something for it.
Asshole.

The one video of police letting in the MAGA crowd into the set up we saw, but the other one of the cop leading the 'demonstrators' up the stairs while 'pretending' to ward them off with a baton is another beyond weird one.

To echo Robert and Ceffer, many people have pointed out the disparity in armed presence between yesterday, and protests/riots over the summer at DC. Agree with the Post. An underwhelming security force escorting protestors into the capital for selfies and giving politicians photo-ops in fake gas masks is certainly surreal.

Seems like everything we see now days is a scripted farce, what's one more..

Really? After a summer of uncontrolled rioting, looting and firebombing of courts and federal buildings you fucking fucks are suddenly woken up and notice something is out of order?
8   RC2006   2021 Jan 7, 8:38am

I didn't see one fire lit, not one police officer injured, no vandalism, yet omg worse event and Trump caused it. Fuck media, I watched "mayor" of DC talk/lie like everything has been roses up till this one event. Left has been destroying cities all year.

... especially taking into account that it was really mostly peaceful. No arson, no looting (an envelope from Pelosi's desk is not it, sorry). The only casualty was that poor woman shot by SS for no good reason at all.

He got his wish, since Italian crypt and decrypt satellites under control of Vatican are now implicated as comm way stations for the Dominion frauds in USA. You could say, his votes are in the bag.

Why didn't Alyssa Milano get shot when she blockaded the doors of Senator's Offices and trapped them in there. Don't remember if it was Graham or McConnell.

These "mostly peaceful protests" were the most destructive and costly civil disorders IN THE NATION'S HISTORY according to Property Claim Services which tracks insurance claims related to civil disorders and has done so since 1950.
Now that BLM has achieved social justice for them, the destroyed neighborhoods can just STFU and wait for some Opportunity Zone racketeers to get around to rebuilding their local services in a few years.

Note the same Government that called out the National Guard in minutes did not do so in June when the city was burning.

She was shot when she was trying to climb in through a broken window. The door appeared to be barricaded.

Not saying that justifies lethal force, but that's what you aren't being told.

this is the video

Interesting catch, RS. My wife says some kind of drivel going around that she isn't dead, she was hit with a rubber bullet. Of course, those are fired from rifles, not hand guns, so what that is all about I don't know. She sure looked dead to me after a bit.

Much of this OrangeManBad hysteria they are working up and provoking is they are trying to make Trump look like a demon conquerer if and when the military come into play. It blares like bullhorn strident agitprop. It means somebody is scared, desperate, and they probably feel like Trump slipped through their fingers.

@Patrick, you still enforce no personal attacks right? About half the comments on here should be removed.

And to those making them, YOU are part of the extremist movement that makes dialogue impossible, and entrenches people in their bullshit paradigms. You think because you call yourself right-wing/conservative/republicans you get a pass? You shame this country with your bigoted intolerance just as much as the left/liberal extremists do.

For shame...

My personal statement was over the line.

However my statement on faux outrage was not.

Keep in mind I do not agree with the storming of the capitol building and am in fact outraged that it happened.

Security should have been better(the national guard should have been deployed ahead of time) and force should be used to prevent/end riot situations.

In the case of OP there was not one peep of outrage at the riots over the George Floyd murder and the burning of cities as well as the overrun of police stations in multiple cities by those rioters. To the point that OP and likeminded people won’t even call them riots.

And so to label their outrage at this situation as fake, pretend, or my favorite term “faux outrage”, is extremely accurate and necessary.

Likeminded individuals are absolutely full of shit.
32   FuckTheMainstreamMedia   2021 Jan 8, 8:34am

I’ll go a step further....left leaning posters here have been hugely disingenuous at best.

Boom and Bust actually denied the reality of the post George Floyd Riots here: https://patrick.net/post/1337353&#comment-1723603

Now I do not know if that was disingenuousness or ignorance, but I don’t much care. Many buildings in downtown LA still boarded up in the aftermath so there’s no excuse for ignorance when the physical evidence is still there as are the many links to videos and pictures posted here at the time. Things tend to denigrate to name calling and insults when there’s that level of being an ostrich, but still insisting on vocally airing ones opinion.
33   FuckTheMainstreamMedia   2021 Jan 8, 8:46am

For clarity, some people who are just outraged over the storming of the capitol, had zero issue with this(btw multiply times multiple cities):

I must admit: the sight of mighty congresscritters cowering, running and hiding like little bitches was a guilty pleasure. I hope this incident (however fake) reminded them the importance of having the consent of the governed. Because next time it can happen for real.

In 1954, Left Wing Puerto Ricans shot 5 (FIVE) Representatives in the Capitol Building.

Just FYI for the "UNPRECEDENTED!"

@Onvacation

Yes, that. Flag the ones that are personal, if it's really bad and gets approved, flag it again.

And try the ignore function. If you really want to insult someone, ignore them. It's a much more profound insult than calling them names. The ignored person doesn't even exist, while the insulted person has taken up space in your head and gets the pleasure of knowing they got to you.
