Again, this war could have been avoided. Zelenskyy was elected to end the civil war with Eastern Ukraine, and didn't - he hosted US biological weapons labs, and continued the war with NATO support, and he's a citizens of Israel, Ukraine, and Cyprus. Dual citizenship bars somebody from office in Ukraine, but technically, triple citizenship doesn't.

Time will tell, but I'm very doubtful Russia will lose this conflict, although the US might claim they lost it. The US did, after all, achieve all aims and objectives in Afghanistan, whatever the fuck they were.

I exchanged email with him a few months ago, and promised to send him a response in 2 years. It's confounding to me that an engineer doesn't understand something as simple as science. It's not that hard.

The details are hard, but science is nothing more than understanding reality. Models are frequently difficult to understand, but not really anymore. You can just look it up in a table, you don't need the damned equation anymore.

I think we're approaching the point where all the lies are starting to meet reality, but I NEVER expected science educated nerds to just believe "the government". Nobody thinks.

Dude, people that haven't lived in a northern climate that don't have a non-winterized summer home have no idea what they are up against.

Their pipes will freeze, they will freeze, it will be hell on Earth for them. I grew up just south of Canada in New York, we had power outages that lasted days, the first thing we did was fire up a generator and the furnace in winter. We knew it was an emergency, shitty dwellers will have no clue.

I can, and have, camped out in the middle of winter in a tent. It's not exactly wonderful, but it's interesting, for a WEEKEND. Going through 4 months of that shit, would be misery.

Running water slowly will not prevent pipes from freezing, you do this to forestall it. Preventing incoming water from freezing isn't the huge concern, it's more the sewage pipes freezing. Your toilet trap freezes, you're fucked. Think you can pour hot water down it to unclog it, maybe, it the trap doesn't burst, if the toilet seal doesn't melt because its made from beeswax or synthetic wax. You have the same problem in the shower and the kitchen sink.

Living in subfreezing weather for days at a time, is exhausting without some power. I've done it. No thermostat, fire up the fireplaces, running a Coleman lantern, opening all doors to spread heat, horrendously cold showers. If power runs out in Europe's cities, there's going to be chaos. Not just burst sewage lines, not just people freezing to death, riots.

Bet many Russians have gone through this, they know what to do, but I doubt many Swedes or Germans have.

If your power and water are going to be out, drain the lines and blow them out with air pressure if you have it. That's the best chance. Flush your toilet, dump anti-freeze into it - do this with all drains. We used to move food from the freezer to outdoors, I remember that. Couldn't let the internal heat of the house with the fireplaces to ruin it. We had coolers, to keep it from freezing. We'd pack snow into the vegetable drawers to cool it for the fridge, but freezer food, that went outside.

Looking back, it was kind of fun, we all had to work together to secure the home, stay warm, and prevent damage. Not so fun if you don't know what to do, and my father was a furnace repairman. He knew PRECISELY what to do.

Ever been deprived of power for, say, a week? We had a generator but it was for essentials, and that was for running a wood furnace.

I assume Europeans have gas grills and camping propane at least, right? I'd get a couple of those heaters and make sure I have plenty of propane. Maybe get a 100lbs tank. Use it sparingly, but I think most could get by. Most people have a nat gas or propane heater/furnace in cold areas, so a couple little propane heaters could do the trick. I assume there'd end up being a shortage of them though.

And I get what Rich is saying about the cities. It could become chaos. I don't know European cities personally. There will always be a faction of people that are morons that did no preparation. Another reason to not live in cities. And there's also a lack of community.

The running water thing does work for long periods of time though. If connected properly it should be below the freeze line coming into the home or building. Water that is technically "warm" won't freeze if it's moving. It would take a long cold stretch with zero heat source. Basically you'd have to be lazy or a moron not to figure it out. I open my cabinets on all sinks and run a slow stream when we go on vacation in the winter.

I dealt with it in foreclosed (REO) properties in Chicagoland. ComEd (our power company) would pull the meter because the previous owner didn't pay. So furnace/boiler couldn't run. It would sometimes take 2 weeks to get it back in during the worst part of winter with days in a row of 0ºF-20ºF temps. Only had one pipe break during the housing crash and that was roughed in plumbing above a garage that was hidden for future usage that we didn't know about. That was in a heated home as well. We just didn't turn on the garage heater.

I think Europe will be fine. It's just what percentage of them are morons. If it's above 25% in the truly cold/freezing cities, then yes, they're fucked. There are solutions in urban areas for cold though. We'll see if Europe is smart enough.

The "easy" part was supposed to be the shock and awe conventional part where they would quickly overthrow Zelensky's government assuming a big chuck on the Ukrainian population supported Russia. That is all out the window.

If Russia does manage to hang onto portions of Eastern Ukraine, I would think Russia and their puppets would be facing years of bloody insurgency.

I see most of the 300,000 just boots on the ground to act as police force within regions that they already control. Its to solidify their control such as the region north of Crimea, as well as the water supply. I suspect they are trying displace anyone within those regions who do not toe the line as far as Kremlin takeover, and they'll bring in Russians to populate these areas following Stalin's playbook.

They may reinforce the border of this region with regular troops. I do not know if they will try to move further west within the next 12 months, but they may try to recover from this and eventually move toward Kiev.
