Just saw on CNBC that Ebay is laying off 9% of its full time workforce.

Google recently annouced layoffs. Are the techs doing this to ensure earnings projections continue steadily upward ?

Perhaps its a reaction to them not meeting expectations for earnings for Oct-Dec 2023 ?

They appear to be correcting their previous overhiring, where they were hiring people to prevent competitors from hiring them, even though they had no work to give them. They are blaming AI because they don't want to talk about their own incompetence.

it will be interesting to see how the continue to manage their workforce like how Amazon is trying to refill leased office space by requiring workers to return to the office under a hybrid schedule

The job market is interesting. My biz partner has 3 friends, who have been looking since March 2023 with no luck. Two went through multiple rounds of interview, but didn’t get the job.

My tennis coach’s division got shut down last May. He got 9 months of severance. He took time off and traveled to Paris for Roland Garros; then New York for the US Open. Got a call from a recruiter and got a job with Cruise. 3 weeks into the job, they announced layoff and he got let go. They gave him 4 months of severance. Worked 6 months and got paid for 19 months in 2023. He took time off and went to Bangkok, then Australian Open. Just came back on Sunday. Got a call for a job interview yesterday. He just texted me he’s working on Monday.

It seems like when you’re not looking, you get job offers and higher salary, or maybe he’s specialized in a high demand niche profession.
