Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, having received a lackluster response when he pitched his ‘victory plan’ to US officials in Washington last month, now says that Ukraine must either join NATO or obtain nuclear weapons.

He made the ultra provocative comments while speaking before the EU’s European Council in Brussels, where he presented the victory plan before European lawmakers. That’s when he referenced a recent private conversation with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying he told Trump that his country needs “some kind of alliance” or be “forced to pursue nuclear weapons.”

“In a conversation with Donald Trump I said – this is our situation: What way out do we have? Either Ukraine will have nuclear weapons, which for us will be a defense, or we’ll need to have some sort of alliance, besides NATO. But today we know of no other alliance,” Zelensky said.

MOSCOW, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Washington's decision to let Kyiv strike deep into Russia with long-range U.S. missiles escalates the conflict in Ukraine and could lead to World War Three, senior Russian lawmakers said on Sunday.

Two U.S. officials and a source familiar with the decision revealed the significant reversal of Washington's policy in the Ukraine-Russia conflict earlier on Sunday.

"The West has decided on such a level of escalation that it could end with the Ukrainian statehood in complete ruins by morning," Andrei Klishas, a senior member of the Federation Council, Russia's upper chamber of parliament, said on the Telegram messaging app.

Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy head of the Russian upper house's international affairs committee, said that Moscow's response will be immediate.

"This is a very big step towards the start of World War Three," the TASS state news agency quoted Dzhabarov as saying.

President Vladimir Putin said in September that the West would be fighting Russia directly if it allowed Ukraine to strike Russian territory with Western-made long-range missiles, a move he said would alter the nature and scope of the conflict.

Russia would be forced to take what Putin called "appropriate decisions" based on the new threats.

Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma lower house's foreign affairs committee, said that U.S. authorisation of strikes by Kyiv on Russia with U.S. ATACMS tactical missiles would lead to the toughest response, Russian news agencies reported.

Nothing will happen - just like the rest of Putin's red lines. Loads of Russian weapons and trainers were used to kill US military in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and the US never threatened WWIII.

Figure Ukraine has the next 2 months to try and attrit as much of the Russian military as possible and claw back some land to get a better bargaining position for cease fire talks when Trump gets sworn in.

After studying in Germany, I realized that the reason the Germans can drink arbitrarily young is that they generally don't drive until much later than Americans, and the driving tests there are much more expensive and stricter than here.

Americans are not supposed to drink before 21, but are easily able to drive starting at 16. That's partly due to the vast size of America and abysmal public transit, so a car is really a necessity in a lot of places.

But people that young do really stupid things in cars when drunk, resulting in a lot of political pressure to stop them from drinking rather than from driving.

So that's the problem in a nutshell.

No chance that is going to happen now. By Ukraine refusing to roll over and die they are at least going to retain their country's independence, nation's capital and central government, despite the likelihood of losing some valuable land in the East.

There is no putting any lipstick on this pig and trying to act like Russia has "won" anything other than a more unified Europe, 2 new NATO members, hundreds of thousands of Russian casualties and showing the whole world their military is a sad joke.
