Pretty obvious that corps, esp. service/hospitality business, are trying to throw costs back on the exhausted consumer.

This actually started years ago, when a few decades after breaking janitor unions, hotels began "Recommending" $5/night for room service instead of $5-10 for a week's stay. Back then the millie chicks hadn't fully taken over Media yet so there was pushback in the news.

Now, Restaurants are trying to normalize 20% tips, and tipping for takeou/counter staff at all. Nope!

They already hiked their prices big league before the 20% tip push, so wait staff are already getting proportionally more.

Remember: 15% meh, 18% Good, 20%+ excellent, amazing, beyond the call of duty

And this push started before the $15-18/hr minimum wage hikes in some states.

10% used to be normal.

10% used to be normal.

And even then, only for good service.

not for barista with 10 nose rings who handed you a cup of coffee, flipped ipad around and stares you down as you choose an option?

She can stare all she wants. I will hit "no tip" unless it was delivered to my table.

Same as Wookie,

I tip at restaurants, barber, taxi, luggage guy at hotels….rarely I’ll tip at a sandwich place if they go above and beyond or otherwise make a fantastic sandwich. Never tip at coffee places, ice cream, takeout, etc.

Does she have a chance to spit in your coffee then? If not - no tip.

Service matters. I take my son to pole vault every Sunday. Eat breakfast when he's doing boring drills not worth watching. I do watch at the end when he's jumping. Get the same waitress she's learned my name and mine hers and brings what I want before I ask.

I'm in an out in 30 min. Frees a table up for her for more customers and I get to watch the kid jump and then criticize him...lol. Pound 2 mimosas with an hour to chill out and be safe driving.

I'll never tip a coffee person, although I don't drink regular coffee. Been doing the mushroom coffee with minimal caffeine at home. I turn into a full Parkinson's patient if I go full caffeine. A coke is about the max I'll go and that's once a month best case.

Either way I'd never pay someone extra to pour something already made with no effort involved. You can give out 50 cups of coffee in 2-3 min. My god that challenge is so difficult. They'll get a dime if lucky.

Another good reason to pay cash.

Much easier to simply not tip. And no one should ever be tipping for anything ordered while standing at a cash register.

When I was in Italy back in the day (Europe - no tips), counter service was 1/2 to 1/3 the price of sit-down service. Every bar (liquor + coffee) I was about to enter had a waiter try to get me to sit down before I reached the bar counter.

Holy shit. I just came out of the Computer Cave. Located in the Richmond Virginia area.

I bought a new charger and the credit card point of sale put 3 different tip amounts on the screen.

I will never go back.

I see that everywhere from Subway sandwich shops to bowling alleys. I wonder if the POS software is somewhat generic and uses that tip display on all devices.

So tipping is now customary anywhere you swipe your card, it seems. Grocery store, gas station etc. I wonder when we'll start seeing it on Amazon.

We even had it on Patnet once!

Somewhere in the future everyone will walk around with barcode on their outer piece of closing for easy tipping.

I already saw this abomination on a car, had some kind of QR code for donations. Some people feel absolutely no shame begging.

I wonder if beggars will put a tip jar next to their begging cup.
