It seems reasonable to me to disallow the purchase of pop, aka "soda", with EBT (food stamp) cards.

The point of those EBT cards is to get poor people some nutrition. Drinking sugar syrup is the opposite of getting nutrition.

I have a Chinese friend who bought stock in both Coca-Cola and dialysis centers. His reasoning is that he wins on both ends: Coca-Cola causes obesity and kidney disease, and then those poisoned people need dialysis later. Evil reasoning, but not incorrect.

There are many billions of dollars at stake here, all derived from poisoning the public via sugar-water purchased with public money.

So the companies making the poison have started paying off "influencers" on X etc to claim that it's a violation of "freedom" somehow to restrict EBT cards so that they can't buy that poison. It's kind of sad to see them sell out.

Unspoken is the fact that EBT already limits what food you can buy with public money. I think it has to at least have a nutrition label on it to be eligible.

I'd never tell people what they can't buy with their own money, but preventing people from using public money to give themselves diabetes seems fine to me.

Just cut EBT for everyone unless legit disabled and cannot make income. No one in this country is starving if they don't want to. Keep giving them a life line to being lazy. Hell even a wheel chair bound person can make good money.

School lunches for kids are fine, but adults need to adult. Don't be a whore bag single mom. Find a partner. The excuses get annoying after a while.

Some families haven't bought groceries since the 1950s/60s

They have no memory of ever paying for food, there are people in their 50s, 60s, who have never actually paid for groceries, ever

I was a cashier at a grocery in NW San Antonio in the late 80s early 90s and it was rare. In ~3 years I only experienced one person using food stamps and they were literally a roll of stamps that they had to pull out and count in front of everybody. Embarrassment discourages that shit. Now when I'm in line in the same area I see people using the EBT cards all-the-time.

If I recall it was obama who moved things from stamps to cards and expanded that shit greatly.

Many people that have EBT have additional sources of money. That's why restricting EBT to only "essentials," while a good message and good policty, won't actually change eating habits.

Fast food gets a lot from EBT. You know it well, many businesses are direct beneficiaries of EBT. That’s the people who want dependency.

Make EBT money stretch like breakfast for dinner.

Even if not on EBT, cook eggs to make French toast (Wonder Bread and add a little cinnamon).

And Kool Aid Tropic Fruit Punch mix has vitamin C in it. And can buy with EBT on Amazon.

Boil some chicken legs pieces in pot of water and add some diced carrots and yellow onions along with a little garlic and then serve with rice to make chicken soup. Add some chicken bouillon cubes if needed for extra seasoning.

Lots of ways to stretch food budget and still enjoy simple pleasures.

Snap should be very limited to what can be had. Should only be whole foods. No fast food, sodas, processed foods ect. I always thought it should be breeds, produce, milk, eggs, meat.

Any bets on how long it will be before every retail store uses the Costco membership model of business. Require customers to pay a fee upfront for the privilege of shopping there and requiring identification before they can enter. Only way I see to cut down on retail crime.

I think that's a CA thing.

We don't have any of that here in Florida. Not even in the big cities, other than the usual trying to grab a candy bar or 40 and run off with it from a convenience store type thing. But that doesn't usually go well for the perp with all the cameras.
